Head's Weekly Message — Jan. 27, 2023

Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,

I hope you had a chance to attend the fabulous Dance Concert last weekend.  I’m always so enthralled by our amazing students–but I have to say that this particular performance was so moving for me. I was especially pleased that our incoming Head of School, Laura Farrell, was visiting and was able to see our beautiful dancers and our fantastic tech theater students in action. I had a chance to visit with Laura as well, and I am so impressed by her wisdom, kindness and real enthusiasm for Mayfield Senior School. I know I will be leaving our beloved school in very good hands.

This morning our gym was certainly rocking as the faculty and staff took on the Varsity team in our annual hilarious basketball game. The Varsity girls always win (and this year was no exception)—luckily no adults were injured and everyone had a lot of fun. Kudos to all our intrepid faculty and staff athletes!

I’m looking forward to attending a more serious match this afternoon as our Water Polo Cubs take on Poly at 3:30 p.m. Then on Monday, I can’t wait to watch our Soccer Cubs compete against Flintridge Prep at San Marino High School starting at 5:30 p.m. This is a huge game and if the Cubs prevail they will win our first Prep League title in 33 years! We are hoping for a huge and loud Mayfield turnout to cheer on our team. Go Cubs!

Junior families–please make sure that your calendars are marked for Junior College Night, this Wednesday, Feb. 1, starting at 6:30 p.m. in Pike Auditorium. All 11th graders and at least one parent or guardian are required to attend. This is an extremely important meeting and the official kick-off to the college process for the Class of 2024. Please contact the College Office with any questions.

Also–everyone please mark your calendars—next Friday, February 3rd–for our 8th annual Hearts for Arts party. “Welcome to the French Quarter” will gather together the Mayfield community for New Orleans-style food, drink and live music. This year, we are hoping to raise $5,000 for new video studio and recording equipment to facilitate streaming and documenting our arts programs.  I know it's going to be an awesome date night!

Finally–I know you all join me in holding in the Light the victims of the recent mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay as we pray for our community during this sad time. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to support your daughters here at school.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
