Head's Weekly Message — April 8, 2022

Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,

What an incredible joy it was to return from Spring Break to see our beautiful Strub Hall without scaffolding. As our renovation project is nearing completion–my heart is so filled with gratitude for all the flexibility and resilience our community has shown. While we have tried our hardest to keep noise and other inconveniences at a minimum—our students, parents, faculty, and staff have coped with the inevitable challenges with grace and patience. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

As the removal of the scaffolding represented an important milestone—so will the restoration of our beautiful lawns in preparation for graduation. The fencing will be coming down over the weekend followed by resodding the lawn. I just can’t wait to see our campus back to its former glory soon.

It was such a pleasure to see our Junior parents on Wednesday evening as we celebrated our beloved Junior Ring night. This is one of my favorite Mayfield Senior traditions, as it marks the start of the transition of the amazing Class of 2023 into their leadership roles as soon-to-be seniors. The chosen theme of unity was so perfect for this class—they have weathered so much in these last two years with so much love and generosity.  I couldn’t be more proud of them.

I’m also so proud of our community’s commitment to mental health—especially in the context of all we have been through. Yesterday, our student club—Bring Change to Mind—dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues, organized and led an amazing program for our students, faculty, and staff helping us all explore ways to take better care of ourselves and others. I want to thank the club leaders and their faculty facilitator, Emily Goodell ’99 for all their hard work and dedication.

Yesterday—through our Alum Career Lunch Series program—we heard from two inspiring alums making careers in engineering. Both Anna Losorelli Hoyer ’07 and Catherine Tighe ’16 credit their Mayfield education—especially the mentorship and support of Dr. Jack Blumenthal—for their great success.

Finally—I want to encourage all of you to tune into the final installment of our “Inspire” series coming up this Monday, April 11 at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom.  Heidi McNiff Johnson ’84 will be presenting on her own journey of servant leadership--such a wonderful way to begin Holy Week as I pray that your Lenten journey ends with a joy-filled and beautiful Easter celebration.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
