Head of School's Message — Fall 2021

Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,

In all my 30 years as an educator I don’t think I have experienced a more joyful start to the school year. Our Mayfield Senior School community is just so thrilled to be back together, fully in person, on our beautiful campus. It’s been a fabulous homecoming—and what an amazing home we came back to!
Over the summer we were able to accomplish an enormous amount on our Strub Hall renovation project. New art spaces, a new classroom in the library, a new student support and leadership center, a new health office and—my personal favorite—a new senior lounge. The faculty are also enjoying their new break room as the workers are putting the finishing touches on our new catering kitchen. If you haven’t already done so, I hope that you will be able to visit campus soon so that we can give you a tour.

The second phase of our renovation project is well on its way—focusing on a facelift for the fourth-floor administrative offices. Then, after Christmas, attention will turn to Strub’s historic rooms—including my lovely office. All the work should be completed by June—it has been an amazing labor of love.

At long last we have finally been able to welcome our alums home too. On Saturday, Oct. 2 the amazing young women of the classes of 2010 and 2011 were reunited on our beautiful campus for a delicious brunch and tour. Then on Sunday, Oct. 3 we honored the classes of 1960 and 1961 and our two 2020 Cornelian Award recipients, Susan Warner Jackson ’57 and Sr. Anne Kelley ’65, RGS  with a lovely liturgy followed by another fabulous brunch. We all enjoyed connecting and reconnecting with one another, especially after such challenging times, and, as always, I was so inspired to hear about the impressive accomplishments of our alums.

Connecting and reconnecting has certainly become the theme for the 2021-22 school year as we have chosen to focus our attention especially on the Sixth Goal of Holy Child schools, which emphasizes the importance of community connections along with balance, spiritual growth, and wellness. Cornelia Connelly was so ahead of her time in understanding what girls need in their school environment to be healthy and joyful—how blessed we are to be able to support her vision at Mayfield.

In a special way, we are honoring that vision and Cornelia’s transformational legacy in this the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in 1846. I feel so fortunate that I will be able to participate in the celebration, joining members of the Society along with the other heads of Holy Child schools, alums, and friends on Oct. 17 for a commemorative liturgy at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia.

I invite you to join me in prayers of thanksgiving for Cornelia Connelly and all the members of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, as we honor them and the priceless gift they have given to the world—a legacy of service and love.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
