Head's Weekly Message — Oct. 9, 2020

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

I write to you from just past Indianapolis as we drive back to California after our time on the East Coast. Following Maddie’s second birthday celebration in New York, we traveled to Maryland to spend a few days in the home where my husband Skip grew up on the Magothy River, near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It is a beautiful spot filled with many happy memories. I was able to work remotely throughout our stay, and I’m proud to report that by keeping two sets of clocks I didn’t miss a single meeting! However, I am now very ready to get back home to our lovely Pasadena, where I will be able to focus on just one time zone.

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing our students on campus next week for sports conditioning and SAT testing. I also can’t wait to start making lunches for “Loaves and Fishes” again. This past Wednesday, our Mayfield community provided 508 meals for those in need. Also on Wednesday, during Advisory, we all participated in a great assembly in honor of Latinx Heritage Month, produced by the members of Latinas Unidas and Diversity Council. The presentation was extremely enlightening and interesting, bringing up a number of issues of importance while also celebrating Latinx culture. Great job, Cubs!

I hope that you all have had a chance to watch the virtual Back to School Night videos created by your daughters’ teachers. While we continue to prepare to come back to school in person (I’m still hoping for some time in November)—I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone how important it is for us all to follow the safety guidelines published by the CDC. It has been very disturbing to see images of young people in particular attending large gatherings without wearing masks or keeping a safe distance from others. As we get closer to reopening our campus it is extremely important that our students keep themselves virus-free in order to protect themselves, their families, and other members of our school community. Thank you for everything that you are doing to support these efforts, and don’t forget to get your flu shot!

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
