Tennis heads to CIF playoffs as Cross Country chases league title

All eyes were on the tennis team this week as they played two days of back-to-back competition. On Tuesday, the Cubs (ranked #10 in Division 3) hosted Westridge (#1 in Division 4) in the regular season finale for both teams. Both teams came in sporting 6-3 records—and playoff berths—so the winner of the match would take second place in the Prep League.
After a day of great tennis, the match was eventually halted because of darkness, with the Tigers taking a 10-6 win. The Cubs said goodbye to six seniors playing in their final regular season home game—Julianna Bayramyan, Miranda Garcia, Samantha Kennedy, Sofia Mireles, Solunna Nwankwo, and Alexia Saigh finished their careers with two league titles and four consecutive playoff berths.

On Wednesday, the Cubs top two singles players (Samantha Frick ’23 and Sofia Mireles ’20) and top two doubles teams (Elise Kingston ’21/Sheryl Cheng ’23 and Rebecca Leiva ’22/Alexia Saigh ’20) were right back at it, representing the Cubs in the second annual Prep League Tennis Finals. The tournament featured 12 competitors in each bracket, with the top two singles and top two doubles players advancing to the CIF tournament on Nov. 25. The highlight of the day came in a singles semifinal as Samantha Frick won a thrilling match over the #2 seed to advance to her first-ever Prep League Final and the CIF tournament later this month.

The team now awaits its fateon Monday morning they will learn where and when they will start the CIF playoffs next week.

This week ends with the cross country team hosting the Prep League Finals at Pierce College tomorrow. The Cubs are the heavy favorites to win the league title, having been ranked in the top 10 of our section and the state for the past month. The JV girls run at 8:35 a.m. and the Varsity girls run at 9:30 a.m.

Basketball and soccer kicked off our winter sports season with practice this week and the water polo team will join them next week. There is still time to RSVP for the Fall Banquet (today's the deadline!) and to shop in the Cubs Christmas Store for trees, wreaths, and garland.

See you on the field or in the gym...Go Cubs!
