Head's Weekly Message — Feb. 15, 2019

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day and that all this rain did not get in the way of your celebrations. At Mayfield we enjoyed a day filled with love—especially expressed by our assembly speaker, Carmen Chavez, Executive Director of Casa Cornelia in San Diego. Founded 25 years ago as a Holy Child ministry, Casa Cornelia provides pro bono legal services to asylum seekers and victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Ms. Chavez shared some heart-breaking stories while helping us understand our shared mission—to cherish and love the humanity of every human being through the incarnation of the Holy Child Jesus.

Ms. Chavez also connected the work of Casa Cornelia to this year’s “One Book, One Community” novel—Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. The story focuses on teenage heroine Nayeli, who leads a small band of friends on an adventure to find her father in the United States and bring him back to their Mexican town. I found the book very compelling—especially in its descriptions of life along the Mexican border. It is well worth a read.

I hope the skies are clear this evening for our annual Hearts for Arts celebration. This fun and lovely evening is sponsored by the Mayfield Patrons for the Arts to build community and raise money for our arts programs. It will be a great post-Valentine’s Day date night filled with food, friends, and music. I look forward to seeing many of you there!

One thing all this rain has benefitted is the snow pack. Our students will have the opportunity to take advantage of some great ski conditions through our annual trip to Big Bear planned for Sunday, March 17. Chaperoned by our Athletic Director, Steve Bergen, last year the girls had a great time. We need to have at least 25 students sign up by March 7—it should be a wonderful day on the slopes!

Also, we will be emailing your daughter’s re-enrollment contract later today. Please watch for it and follow the steps to register your rising sophomore, junior and senior daughters for the 2019-20 school year by the March 1 deadline.

Finally, I want to give a huge shout out to our robotics program. Last Tuesday we received the good news that one of our Mayfield/Girl Scouts teams will advance to the regional competition on March 9. This is an incredible accomplishment in our very competitive league. GO ROBO CUBS!

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
