Stay vigilant and stay indoors, if you can—for now!

Although Los Angeles county remains in Tier 1, the average number of new cases is decreasing. Our positivity rate is also decreasing. Health officials attribute this to the stricter reopening guidelines that have helped slow the spread of COVID-19. The best way to prevent getting and spreading COVID-19 is to avoid being exposed to the virus, and the best ways to avoid being exposed to the virus are: keeping at least six feet away from people who are not in your household, wearing a face covering whenever you go out and washing your hands frequently. These simple and basic infection control measures remain the best defense against COVID-19.

Because it is highly likely that both flu and COVID-19 will be present at the same time this year, public health officials are urging everyone to get a flu shot this year. You can get one at your local pharmacy or by asking your general practitioner. Pasadena Public Health is asking that schools aim for all students and staff to be immunized, unless contraindicated by documented medical exemption. We encourage you to have your daughter, and everyone in your family, immunized against the flu.

Have you wondered why the smoke seems worse in the mornings? It’s because the surface cooling in the late evening acts as a lid in the atmosphere and traps the smoke, and then when the sun rises, the smoke is released and decreases visibility. This is also when air quality is worse. Health alerts and public health officials are advising that everyone, even healthy individuals, limit physical exertion (whether indoor or outdoor) when air conditions are unhealthy. When air quality is poor, it’s best to avoid being outdoors, keep doors and windows closed, set your A/C to recirculate your household air, use HEPA filters or air purifiers, avoid activities that cause you to breathe deeply and close the vents in your car. You can follow our air quality with the free app from SCAQMD.

Let’s all stay safe and healthy!
