Strub Hall Renovation Project

The Transformation

Securing our home: The next 100 years of Strub Hall

Here's to the girls who become the women who change the world.

We’re about to embark on an exciting project to keep our historic 100-year-old home, and our Holy Child mission, thriving into the next century.

Caring for our landmark home—and our community’s needs

It’s time to bring our beloved home up to date! Strub Hall—the heart, the core, the soul of our campus—needs our urgent attention. Over the next 18 months, we’re making a significant investment in strengthening and modernizing the building’s infrastructure to meet 21st-century sustainability, safety and accessibility standards. These strategic renovations will honor and preserve Strub Hall’s historic beauty while adding and updating spaces that better support the way Mayfield students learn today.

The three-phase project, which will run from May 2021 through June 2022, is comprised of two main elements—the vital and visible changes we’ll all be able to see and enjoy, and the behind-the-walls upgrades that are invisible but imperative.

Our "Strub Hall: Century 2" website is live now and we invite you to take a journey with us there, exploring this transformative project.

List of 2 items.

  • Vital & Visible

Spaces to foster collaboration, creativity and connection.
When Cornelia Connelly asked her educators to “meet the wants of the age,” she could never have imagined the kind of learning environment that helps today’s students thrive. We will repurpose and reconfigure 1,500 square feet of existing space to create new classrooms, meeting rooms and offices that better meet the needs of our students and faculty. These flexible, technology-enhanced spaces can be adjusted as our Catholic, Holy Child education continues to evolve.
  • Invisible but imperative

Upgrading outdated infrastructure to improve efficiency.
These overdue improvements are key to Strub Hall’s long-term survival, and to our community’s continued safety. We urgently need to replace the building’s 100-year-old plumbing, heating, air and electrical systems to improve sustainability and energy efficiency. And, voluntary seismic retrofitting and fire safety enhancements will protect our home and our family, and improve accessibility for everyone in our community.

Project FAQ

The who, what, why and when (and how much) of our upcoming renovations.

List of 8 items.

  • Why are you doing this now?

This project has been nearly five years in the planning, but our discussions have been going on for much longer than that. As custodians of a landmark building, we must preserve and improve our unique home for Mayfield students of today, tomorrow and the next 100 years. Our expert planning committee has also seized this renovation opportunity to reimagine and repurpose innovative learning spaces for our students and faculty while maintaining Strub Hall’s historic value.
  • Will construction affect my daughter returning to campus this year? Or next year?

Not at all! Our students always come first. We are fully prepared to return to campus as soon as we have permission from state and local officials, and the project timeline has been designed to have minimal impact to students. Some limited construction is scheduled to begin in May and will kick into high gear over the summer break. Our facilities team and COVID-19 task force have been working hand-in-glove to schedule construction around our return-to-campus preparation plans.
  • How will you ensure these renovations are not disruptive to school operations?

Our building plan was carefully crafted to minimize disruption. The seasoned professionals at KFA Architecture and Illig Construction specialize in work on school campuses, even while school is in session. The phasing plan was designed to minimize disturbance, with much of the work being completed over summer and winter breaks. Air, dust and noise mitigation have all been well thought out and will be fully within OSHA and ADA guidelines. Student parking will not be affected.
  • What improvements will we see in the near future?

More than half of the planned renovations will be finished over this summer. When students return to campus in the fall of 2021, they will find two new classrooms, a beautiful new senior lounge with direct access to the outside, and improved visual arts spaces—including dramatic upgrades to the darkroom and digital film and media lab. We will all enjoy a number of enhanced spaces, including a renovated health office and a new student support and leadership center.
  • How is Mayfield Senior School going to pay for this project?

Mayfield is in a strong financial position, with an endowment of $13 million. Our fundraising for the Strub Hall campaign has already begun with a few early seven-figure benchmark gifts, and our goal is to raise $17,500,000 in commitments by 2025. This campaign will not be funded by tuition increases. Our annual tuition increase of 3-4% will continue as usual, in line with prior years, to cover school operations.
  • Will school traditions be affected?

We have planned the timing of the projects around our beloved traditions. Graduation will still be on the North Lawn, with a reception on the Pergola Lawn. Christmas celebrations will return to Strub Hall at long last! The only event that may be affected will be the Senior Tea in May 2022. This mother-daughter tradition will still take place, either on or off campus.
  • What will happen to summer school?

Summer school will not be affected by the construction. Classes will simply be held on other parts of the campus.
  • How will Mayfield remain COVID-compliant during construction?

We will continue to maintain rigorous safety procedures, including social distancing, masking, self-screening and contact tracing. Restrictions and guidelines change regularly, and we will follow all updates to health and safety guidelines closely. Again, with the phasing plan in place, there will be very few opportunities for students or staff to cross paths with our renovation teams, and we will also maximize use of our outdoor spaces.

What this means for our community

List of 5 items.

  • More spaces for students and teachers to collaborate

So much of a Holy Child education happens beyond the classroom—when teachers become mentors and cheerleaders. Our students need dedicated places to meet with their teachers and advisors one-on-one for office hours and other consultations. And, teachers also need space to collaborate on cross-departmental lessons—the kind of interdisciplinary learning that helps teenage brains connect concepts and gain deeper understanding.
  • Campus-wide access to tech-enhanced educational experiences

We’re always looking for ways to maximize the kind of 21st-century learning spaces that build collaborative, confident students who are ready for college and beyond. This remodel ensures that our older Strub Hall classrooms have the kind of flexible, technology-enhanced layouts that support student-centered learning. We’re also adding two new classrooms and a dedicated digital content hub.
  • Improved health, safety and accessibility for all

Our students, teachers and staff will benefit from improved earthquake and fire safety infrastructure, and everyone will a little breathe easier with a new HVAC system that boosts our indoor air quality. We’re also enhancing access with ramps to enable everyone in our community to safely navigate Strub Hall, furthering our Catholic, Holy Child commitment to inclusivity and respect.
  • A focus on empowering student leaders

Holy Child students learn how to lead others, to educate and inspire their classmates to participate with Actions Not Words. Mayfield’s student-led organizations need places to meet, strategize, and collaborate, whether they’re making a video for an assembly presentation, planning a Mass, or coming up with spirit games to entertain and engage their classmates. We’re creating a central hub for student empowerment in Strub Hall, a place to foster dialogue, celebrate our differences, and support spiritual and personal growth.
  • A big boost to our sustainability and energy efficiency

Installing efficient and sustainable utilities means substantial cost savings and more resources for our classrooms. Replacing our 100-year-old boiler with a modern HVAC system will provide a more efficient temperature control system, and upgrading our aging plumbing and electrical systems will give us a safe and reliable infrastructure to support the needs of our campus community.
