• Why are you doing this now? 

  This project has been nearly five years in the planning, but our discussions have been going on for much longer than that. As custodians of a landmark building, we must preserve and improve our unique home for Mayfield students of today, tomorrow and the next 100 years. Our expert planning committee has also seized this renovation opportunity to reimagine and repurpose innovative learning spaces for our students and faculty while maintaining Strub Hall’s historic value.

• Will construction affect my daughter returning to campus this year? Or next year?

  Not at all! Our students always come first. We are fully prepared to return to campus as soon as we have permission from state and local officials, and the project timeline has been designed to have minimal impact to students. Some limited construction is scheduled to begin in May and will kick into high gear over the summer break. Our facilities team and COVID-19 task force have been working hand-in-glove to schedule construction around our return-to-campus preparation plans.

• How will you ensure these renovations are not disruptive to school operations? 

  Our building plan was carefully crafted to minimize disruption. The seasoned professionals at KFA Architecture and Illig Construction specialize in work on school campuses, even while school is in session. The phasing plan was designed to minimize disturbance, with much of the work being completed over summer and winter breaks. Air, dust and noise mitigation have all been well thought out and will be fully within OSHA and ADA guidelines. Student parking will not be affected.

• What improvements will we see in the near future? 

  More than half of the planned renovations will be finished over this summer. When students return to campus in the fall of 2021, they will find two new classrooms, a beautiful new senior lounge with direct access to the outside, and improved visual arts spaces—including dramatic upgrades to the darkroom and digital film and media lab. We will all enjoy a number of enhanced spaces, including a renovated health office and a new student support and leadership center.

• How is Mayfield Senior School going to pay for this project? 

  Mayfield is in a strong financial position, with an endowment of $13 million. Our fundraising for the Strub Hall campaign has already begun with a few early seven-figure benchmark gifts, and our goal is to raise $17,500,000 in commitments by 2025. This campaign will not be funded by tuition increases. Our annual tuition increase of 3-4% will continue as usual, in line with prior years, to cover school operations.

• Will school traditions be affected?

  We have planned the timing of the projects around our beloved traditions. Graduation will still be on the North Lawn, with a reception on the Pergola Lawn. Christmas celebrations will return to Strub Hall at long last! The only event that may be affected will be the Senior Tea in May 2022. This mother-daughter tradition will still take place, either on or off campus.

• What will happen to summer school?

  Summer school will not be affected by the construction. Classes will simply be held on other parts of the campus.

• How will Mayfield remain COVID-compliant during construction?

  We will continue to maintain rigorous safety procedures, including social distancing, masking, self-screening and contact tracing. Restrictions and guidelines change regularly, and we will follow all updates to health and safety guidelines closely. Again, with the phasing plan in place, there will be very few opportunities for students or staff to cross paths with our renovation teams, and we will also maximize use of our outdoor spaces.
