Summer@Mayfield

Fun and challenging summer sessions for girls grades 6-9!

Choose from two three-week sessions (June 17 - July 5 & July 8-26) or sign up for both!

You can choose up to four 85-minute classes a day. Courses run Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. Each three-week session costs between $350-$485, depending on the course. Most classes are offered in both sessions, but there are some exceptions in Blocks 3 and 4—scroll down to view the schedule. Keep scrolling to read detailed course descriptions!

    Classes run in 85-minute blocks between 9:00 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. Course fees range from $350-$485. Most courses are offered both sessions.

  • Advanced Algebra for Geometry Readiness (for rising 9th-graders only)

    Open to Mayfield students entering 9th grade by Math Department recommendation
    Session 1: June 17, 2019 - July 3, 2019
    Session 2: July 8 - July 26, 2019
    8:15 AM to 10:15 AM (Monday-Friday) 
    $470
    This course is for students preparing for 9th-grade Geometry. Covering the last four chapters of the Algebra I textbook, this course focuses on quadratic functions and their graphs as well as word problems.
    Required for students according to placement exam results.
  • Animation

    Session 1: June 17 - July 5, 2019

    Have you ever wondered how your favorite cartoon was created? Well, look no further. This animation workshop will introduce students to the basic principles of animation and design. We will explore color, storytelling, personal narrative, and digital artwork through visual culture.

  • Black & White Photography Lab

    Session 1: June 17 - July 5, 2019

    $350 +$50 Materials Fee
    Have you ever wanted to learn more about photography and the darkroom? This class centers on camera operation and aesthetics, exposure control, film processing, printmaking and the development of a personal style. Regular shooting assignments, group discussion and critiques encourage individual skills and interests. A survey of photographic history is included to increase visual awareness and to suggest the relationship of photography to other visual arts. Required items to be supplied by the student: 35mm SLR (single lens reflex) manual control camera with internal light meter, a 3-ring binder, and 6-8 rolls of Kodak T-max 100 Black & White 35mm film.

  • Creative Writing Workshop

    Session 1: June 17 - July 5, 2019
    Session 2: July 8 - July 26, 2019

    This workshop is open to student writers of all levels and interests. You will be given a variety of exercises to get your creative juices flowing. Students will write short stories, creative nonfiction, and scripts. You will be able to share your writing with your classmates for feedback and encouragement.

  • Dance - Hip Hop Workshop

  • Designing for Social Impact

    Session 2: July 8 - July 26, 2019

    Create with a purpose. In this studio art class, students experience a dynamic immersion in the visual arts. Students will select from innovative projects ranging from drawing, to painting, and architecture. Media such as watercolor, acrylic paint, pencil, pastel, pen and ink, as well as felt, fabric, embroidery, and wood block will be available for students to realize their individual vision.

  • Instrumental Music Ensemble

    Make music, build skills and take your music to a higher level! This workshop will focus on building skills in rhythm, harmony, sight-reading and performance of instrumental music. All instruments are welcomed. We will explore a range of musical styles that include classical, popular, world music, experimental, drones and free improvisation. Beginner and intermediate instrumentalists are welcome to participate.

  • ISEE Test Prep Bootcamp

    The Learning Ladder, a La Canada based exam preparation and tutoring company brings their acclaimed ISEE bootcamp to Mayfield. This course will introduce students to the middle and upper levels of the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE), an admission's test required by independent, private and Catholic schools. The ISEE is a challenging assessments of a student's proficiency in vocabulary, reading, mathematics and essay writing. In this course, students will learn strategies and review core material that will appear on the sections of the ISEE.   • Math for High School

    Session 1: June 17 - July 5, 2019
    Session 2: July 8 - July 26, 2019

    This class is designed to teach the fundamentals of Algebra. The class will cover the fundamentals of Algebra that are most needed for success in future math courses, such as graphing linear equations, factoring, absolute value equations and graphs, solving and graphing inequalities and systems of equations.
    A TI82/83+ calculator is recommended, but not required. (The purchase of a workbook is required.)

  • Readiness for High School Algebra (for rising 9th-graders only)

    Open to Mayfield students entering 9th grade by Math Department recommendation
    Session 1: June 17, 2019 - July 3, 2019

    This course is for students to work on basic Algebraic theory. It will cover the first three chapters of the Algebra textbook, highlighting variable equations and lines so students will be prepared for Algebra I in the fall.

  • Technical Theatre Workshop

    Session 2: July 8 - July 26, 2019

    This workshop will give students a hands-on introduction to set-building, staging, lighting, and much more. Students will learn the principles of stage management and the basics of working with a set and crew. This workshop is perfect for students who are interested in learning what goes on behind the scenes of theatre productions.
  • Theatre/Improv Workshop

    Session 1: June 17 - July 5, 2019

    Explore the craft of acting in a fun and focused course. This class emphasizes physical, vocal and creative training, and is designed to expand your skills as a performer.
