During the first part of Theology III, Sacraments and Catholic Social Teaching, students examine the Church’s sacramental view of all reality and the nature of the Church, instituted by Christ and encountered through the work of the Holy Spirit. Students expand their understanding of the sacred made visible through the seven sacraments, and deepen their grasp of the mystery of the Holy Spirit as it imparts Jesus’ grace throughout their lives, both personally and in communion with others through the social mission of the Church. An exploration of the lives of holy women and men of the Church, both historical and contemporary, foster students’ awareness of their unique capacity to transform the world to one of justice and peace with God’s grace. The focus of the second part is Catholic Ethics, which is on Jesus’ teaching “that they may have life” as students contemplate God’s plan for eternal life, love, and happiness as disciples of Christ. Viewing modern ethical issues through the lens of Christ’s example, teaching of the Beatitudes, and contemporary moral teachings of the Church, students explore and apply concepts of natural law, synderesis, virtue, stages of moral development, informed conscience, sin, reconciliation, and metanoia to contemporary ethical dilemmas. As students examine the choices that confront them and apply methods of moral decision-making, they also contemplate the loving presence of Christ’s message in their lives, its expression throughout the history of the Church, and the insights of modern moral theologians into ethical dilemmas of the 21st century.
