Winter sports on the cusp of making playoffs; alumnae Cubs show their spirit

As the Cubs returned to school this week, Prep League match-ups resumed with a playoff push for all three teams.
But before the stats, we have celebrations! Christmas vacation heralded two spirited Cubs gatherings during our annual Alumnae Games. Dozens of Cub alumnae faced off with current Cubs for a some great, fun games. On the first day of vacation more than 30 alums—going back to the Class of ’89—played with our Varsity Soccer team at Occidental College. The alums wore shirts honoring three Mayfield classmates who we have recently lost—Kelly Langs '92, Molly Lynch '91 and Cori Rising '89. Varsity Soccer won 4-1 after a tough game with our super-fit alums. A week later, the Varsity Basketball team matched up in the Cubs Cave with another alum team, led by our JV coach Malissa Balderama '09. The alums gave Varsity all they could handle before finally falling late in the game. It was wonderful to see so many Cub alums playing together and competing with so much enthusiasm. The basketball teams even shared a meal together afterwards!

Now back to current play. This week our Basketball, Soccer, and Water Polo teams all returned to CIF action. All three teams are on the cusp of making the playoffs and will need a big push in the final three weeks of the season to qualify. Varsity Soccer went 1-0-1 this week. The Cubs tied Westridge yesterday and defeated Chadwick in Palos Verdes 3-0 on Tuesday. It was the Cubs’ first win at Chadwick in nearly 10 years. Basketball and Water Polo both have very important games coming up with Poly, Prep and Westridge. Each team is hoping to return to the playoffs and make some noise.

We hope to have a big turnout at our Annual Booster BBQ on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Traditionally, the BBQ is held in the fall, but this year the Booster Club decided to move the event to celebrate our Basketball team. On that Tuesday, the Cubs will take on cross-town rival Pasadena Poly in basketball. We will certainly have a big student crowd and the Boosters will be serving a delicious BBQ and selling all the Cubs gear you could want. We hope you will join us!

Lastly, as we enter the final weeks of the winter season, our spring sports teams (Badminton, Softball, Swim/Dive, Track/Field) are gearing up for their season. Tryouts for spring sports begin on Monday, Feb. 4

Our student-athletes need lots of support in the coming weeks. It is always very special to have big crowds. We hope to see you at a game cheering the Cubs on to victory, or following @msscubs on Twitter.

Happy New Year and Go Cubs!
