Winter sports take off with a flurry of wins and achievements

As winter sports continue to enjoy early season success, one athlete is now competing at the sport’s highest level. We have spoken much of Audrey Suarez ’21 lately, and for good reason. Last week our California state champion ran in the FootLocker West Regionals against the finest runners from over 15 states in the Western region. Audrey was in the lead pack for the entire 3.1 mile race and finished sixth overall.
Her finish has qualified her to compete in tomorrow's FootLocker National Championships in San Diego. Audrey will compete with 39 of the fastest cross country runners from all over the country. The girls race will be at 9:15 a.m. and the boys race will be at 10:00. You will be able to watch Audrey run live online here. Good luck Audrey!

Our varsity soccer team has also been having a great week. The Cubs have been competing in the Duarte Tournament in cool, wet conditions. The team went 2-1 in their pool, defeating Temple City and cross-town rival Maranatha, much to the enjoyment of our head coach and Maranatha alum, Lachlan Cameron. The Cubs won their pool on goal differential and will now play tomorrow at Duarte against Glendora High School in the championship game at 11:00 a.m. It should be a beautiful morning. After you watch Audrey online, you can head down the 210 to watch the Cubs play for the tournament championship. Entered in the same tournament, our JV Red soccer team has been playing against varsity teams and holding their own! They even soundly defeated Alverno's Varsity squad yesterday, 8-1, on the strength of three goals from Ariana Dalie ’22. Not to be outdone, the JV White team picked up a big victory on Tuesday, defeating Cantwell Sacred Heart, 5-0.

The basketball teams had a busy week with Prep League play opening up. Both teams went 2-1 in league play. Varsity defeated Westridge and Rio Hondo Prep. Coming into the games, RHP was ranked #1 and Westridge was ranked #5 in CIF Division 5AA. The Cubs, ranked #12 in 4A, fell to defending league champion Flintridge Prep last night, but gave the Rebels their toughest game of the year. Our JV team also defeated RHP and Westridge. Varsity will play in the Artesia Tournament this week as the defending champions! Go defend that title Cubs!

Lastly, the water polo team battled Chadwick in a great match out in Palos Verdes on Tuesday. The Cubs started slowly and fell behind 6-1 in the first half before storming back and cutting the lead down to one in the second half. The Dolphins eventually held off the Cubs, but the experience will no doubt help us down the road. They will be back in action today on the road taking on league foe Brentwood. Look for the Cubs to get back in the win column!

Finally, it should be a festive atmosphere on campus today and tomorrow. Early this morning, 180 Christmas trees were cut in Oregon and put on a truck that will be reaching Mayfield late this afternoon. With some help from our Athletic Leadership Council and some hearty parent volunteers, we will unload the trees this afternoon for pick-up and delivery tomorrow!

Continue to follow Cubs athletics on twitter @msscubs and we hope to see you out at a game!

Go Cubs!
