Fall sports hand off to winter teams after their winning season

Our Winter Sports season officially kicked off this week with our first games. But before we move on to basketball, soccer, and water polo, we took time to honor our fall sports athletes. More than 300 Cub supporters gathered on Wednesday night for our fall sports banquet—and what a banquet it was, with 70 boxes of Costco pizza, 10 bags of salad and really cool centerpieces, if I say so myself! The spirited event reflected the pride we have had for the fantastic achievements of our cross country, golf, tennis and volleyball teams. Huge thanks to all who helped launched this new format.

We also want to recognize our Athlete of the Week, Senior Laura Arcia, who ran her personal best time at the CIF Cross Country Prelims last Saturday. Laura and her Cub teammates placed second in their heat and have qualified to run in tomorrow's CIF Finals in Riverside at 9:15. A top-seven finish overall and they will advance to the CIF State meet. Follow @msscubs for live results!

As I mentioned, our basketball and soccer teams started off this week. Varsity soccer scrimmaged Immaculate Heart on Tuesday before playing their first game of the season last night at Glendale High. A second half goal from Elena Jardino ’20 was the final score in a 1-1 tie with the Nitros. Our JV Red team (one of TWO JV soccer teams) defeated Glendale in their first game of the year, 2-0.

Basketball tipped-off their season last night up the hill at FSHA. JV defeated the Tologs, 31-19. In the varsity game, the Cubs led for most of the game before eventually falling 31-26. A great first game of the year for both teams. Varsity will open play in the Providence Tournament next week.

A special shoutout to our new club sport, the Cub Squash team. Tomorrow in Aliso Niguel, 14 Cub squashers will play their first match in school history. No doubt they will make us proud.

Lastly, thank you to all of those who purchased Christmas tree from the Cubs Christmas Store. With your support, we sold 178 trees this year—an all-time record for Mayfield! The Christmas spirit is in the air! Please sign up to lend a hand with tree set up and delivery on Dec. 7 & 8—chainsaws and pickup trucks VERY welcome!

Don't forget, there are many other ways to support our Cubs. Get out to a game! The full schedule for all teams is updated, with results, on the school website. Also, we are still hoping for new members to join our Booster Club.

Once again, thank you for all of your support. See you in the gym, on the field, and at the pool.

Go Cubs!
