Cubs close a great fall season and winter team tryouts start next week

A busy week for the Cubs as seasons ended for two fall sports, another extended its run and we prepare for the start of winter sports next week!
The league championship golf team competed at the CIF Regional Team Championship in Riverside on Monday. Four of the six golfers were competing in the championships for the first time as the Cubs represented the Prep League in fine fashion.

Tennis won its CIF wildcard game on Tuesday over Fullerton, 11-7, then had to turn around the next day and travel up to Oxnard for a first round game on Wednesday. The swirling windy conditions made for some interesting moments, and the Cubs gave #3 Rio Mesa all they could handle, trailing 6-5 at one point in the match, before falling, 12-6.

Both cross country teams competed in the Prep League Championships last Saturday at Pierce College. Led by sophomore Audrey Suarez's first place finish (and MVP of the league award), varsity placed second, just behind Flintridge Prep (the No. 2 team in the state), 41-43. The team qualified for next weekend's CIF Prelims out in Riverside and the Cubs are training hard to make another run at CIF and state titles.

New to Mayfield, our squash club team started practice this past week with 16 athletes picking up a racket and learning a great new sport.

Our impressive equestrian team had their first competition of the season last Sunday with some terrific results: Ellery Hotchkis ’21 (4th) and Claire Williamson ’20 (6th) in Varsity jumpers. Amelia Enzminger ’19 placed second in her class. Hannah Attar ’21 placed fourth in the JV jumpers. Jordan Brown ’20 placed third and 11th in the JV Hunters classes. Jolie Beegle ’21 (8th) and Hope Beegle ’21 (9th) were great in the Freshmen Jumpers. A fine showing by the Cubs!

Winter sports will be starting tryouts on Monday. Look for more details to come, but basketball, soccer, and water polo all start at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Basketball in the gym; soccer at Occidental; and Water Polo at Altadena Town & Country Club.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. The deadline to order your Christmas tree is one week from today! Don't forget to place your order to have your freshly cut, beautiful tree waiting for you on campus on Dec. 8. Don’t delay—order now before the Nov. 9 deadline.

Quiet week for games next week. But the cross country team will run out in Riverside in the morning.
