At an all-girls school, pep rallies are crazy-raucous
When you go to an all-girls school, you are not afraid to eat pie in three seconds to score a win for your class.
You are not afraid to be wrapped in toilet paper and then race across the gym. You play dodgeball with a vengeance.
And when you go to the first Mayfield pep rally of the school year, you are not afraid to scream and raise your voice with your classmates in a deafening show of school spirit! It’s not about cheering for a football or other sports team. It’s about donning your class color for the year—green, black, orange or purple—and cheering for Mayfield!
“Spirit rallies are important because it builds Mayfield community,” said Catie Sanchez ’19, co-president of the Athletic Leadership Council, which organized the rally. “They bring everyone together, all the classes, athletes, the art conservatories—everyone.”
Indeed, Mayfield pep rallies are a special brand of actions and (loud) words—laughter, raucous spirit games and crazy, nonsensical cheers.

The group silliness, students said, is an antidote to stress. School administrators calendared the rally to coincide with end-of-quarter tests.
“It really takes the stress away and gives you a chance to not focus on schoolwork and grades,” said Maeve Davitt ’19. “And because we are all girls, we are not afraid to step it up. We just enjoy being part of one community.”
Yet a competitive community.
Seniors, feeling empowered as school leaders these days, won the spirit games.
