Mayfield creators transform campus into art spaces

The work of our Mayfield artists transformed the Student Commons into an art gallery and performing arts space, brought beautiful music to Strub Hall and turned the Pike stage into a dance and theatre performing arts house.
Mayfield’s All Arts Preview offered the school year’s first look at what our young creators have been up to in their respective arts.

“I am really proud of the work the visual artists have accomplished in such a short time,” said Paul Tzanetopoulos, whose Photo, and Film and Media students shared their work in print and on screen. Original drawings and paintings curated from Arts Foundations through Advanced classes gave Hayden Commons a gallery setting that put guests in the mood for art.

It was there where the evening’s performances began first by the Instrumental Conservatory musicians followed by Conservatory Creative Writers who shared pieces in poetry and personal memoir.

As guests progressed to Strub Hall it was standing-room only for those lucky enough to grab a spot to enjoy the voices of Mayfield singers.

“This was the premiere performance for vocal foundations class and they did a great job,” said Vocal Director, Andrew Alvarez. Women’s Ensemble capped off their selections with a difficult piece they plan on taking to Chicago for competition next spring.

Theatre Conservatory members acted out the process of auditions that enthralled audience members with a behind-the-scenes perspective. And in a role reversal, Technical Theatre Conservatory students took center stage to describe their empowering experience creating with power tools.

The Dance Conservatory, Denise Leitner’s largest group since starting at Mayfield four years ago, played themselves in a clever choreographed musical theatre piece and a warm up number.

“It’s truly my favorite event of the year because it brings together the Mayfield Arts community in one special night,” said Kimberly Gomez, Chair of the Fine Arts Department.
