Who has God chosen to be our trustworthy guides? Fr. Greg Boyle celebrates Baccalaureate Mass and reveals the answer.

With inspiring words and a heartfelt message, the Rev. Greg Boyle, S.J., celebrated our Baccalaureate Mass, sending forth our seniors not so much “to make a difference,” as the cliche goes, but to serve others “so that the folks at the margins make you different.”
Fr. Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world, spoke about the God’s special, preferential love for the those on the margins, “the widow, the orphan, the stranger,” who Jesus believes are “our trustworthy guides to lead the rest of us to the kinship of God.”

“Oh the places you will go Class of 2018,” he told the seniors. “You go from here and you go to the margins and you will be inclined to say say ‘I want to make a difference.’ But then it’s about you.

“We don’t go the widow, orphan and stranger to rescue them.” he said. “But go figure. If we go to the margins we will all find rescue.”

Following his moving homily, our seniors received the Mayfield medallions they wore on graduation day from alumnae. In a cherished tradition, these Mayfield mothers, sisters and friends tied on the white ribbons bearing the medallions and then embraced their senior with great joy.
