Big shout-out to freshman Track & Field standout Audrey Suarez '21

We wrap up the 2017-18 Cubs Athletic season with great history-making news! Audrey Suarez ‘21, our fast-as-light runner qualified for the Track & Field CIF State Championship, running her heart out at the Clovis meet while we were all ensconced in graduation festivities.
Audrey placed 5th overall in the 1600m and is among the top three fastest freshmen in the country, a historic milestone for Mayfield. She “made podium,” standing alongside five other champions at State.

What’s more, Audrey and two other freshmen from Chino Hills and Village Christian high schools placed in the top six, the first time in CIF State history that three freshmen earned a place on the championship podium for the 1600m.

“It’s really special that there are three freshman who can all run the same times and be up here on the podium,” she said after running the mile in 4:48.04. “I think we were the underdogs going into the race and to prove to people we can really do it is awesome.”

Strategy-wise, Audrey said as she made sure “not to let the gap become too big” between herself and the lead runners.

In addition to her state championship accolades, Audrey was named All Prep League MVP for Track & Field. Congrats Audrey! Go Cubs!
