Cubs runners are breaking records and taking ‘personal bests’ to a new level

With the season well underway, the Cubs Track and Field team is aiming for a repeat Prep League Championship as our athletes are showing stellar results, including Audrey Suarez ’21, who is a nationally and state-ranked runner.
Team members are continually smashing personal records in a season that is a credit to their drive and commitment and a model of Cub sportsmanship and pride.

Mia Koga ’20, has won every pole vault event so far this season that she has entered. Jolie Beegle ’21, likewise, has won every triple jump that she has entered.

Audrey won the 800 meters in just 2:15 minutes at the recent Redondo Nike Track Meet, making her the 6th-fastest high school female in California in all races, all divisions, all schools! In a post-run interview, she told how she started off in the back of the pack and made it to first place in the last 50 meters.

Not only that, her time in the 800 meters currently ranks her #19 in the nation among all high schools and all divisions during for the 2018 outdoor track high school season thus far.

On March 24, Audrey broke a school record at the Azusa Meet of Champions, running the 3200 meters in 10:29. She placed 5th overall in a very talented field, Head Coach Kenny Fisher said, explaining that the best runners in the region competed in this meet. Audrey is currently the fastest freshman in this distance in the country!

Laura Arcia ’19 has been named Mayfield’s March Athlete of the Month for her Track and Field accomplishments. Laura won the 800 meters with a time of 2:26 at the Pasadena Games over the weekend.

Sarah Tupy set personal records in the 100 and 300 meters hurdles and won both events at the recent Pasadena Games in the frosh-soph division. Her Mayfield honor as Athlete of the Month for February also celebrated her work on the Cubs’ basketball team.

Head Coach Kenny Fisher praised these runners, all with different skills and talents and all driven to succeed for themselves and the Cubs.

“Audrey is this talented and gifted runner and Laura’s and Sarah’s drive sets them apart as dedicated and successful athletes,” Coach Fisher said. “They are all extremely hard workers and great examples for the rest of the team.”

As you can see, their results are outstanding and every week they are setting personal records and winning for the Cubs. Here is just a sampling of Mayfield achievements—and we are sure they will be outdated by soon-to-be-new records:
  • Emma Cadena ’20 came in second in the 1500 at Oaks Christian High School for a strong Cub showing.
  • Cameron Gomez ’20 won the 1500 at Oaks Christian and then went on to set two personal records in the distance medley and the 800 at Rosemead High School.
  • Sidney Hendricks ’18 set three personal records—in the 800, the 1600 and 3200—within five days, starting with the early Webb School meet.
  • Maggie Kiechler ’20 has also set a personal record in multiple events.
  • Solunna Nwankwo ’20 won the 100 and 200 meters at the Pasadena games in the frosh-soph division.
  • Sophia Serrano ’21 has broken personal records four times this season, twice in the 800 (each time losing five seconds) and in the 400 and mile.
Distance Coach Nick LaCapria, who comes to Mayfield after six years coaching at La Cañada High School and 22 years at Duarte High, said he feels a renewed excitement for coaching after working with our athletes.

“This group of athletes really enjoys running and really wants to get better and better,” Coach LaCapria said. “They are putting in the hard work and they are bonding as a team. They are all really on a roll and it’s really, really nice.”

Coach Fisher said we are favored to win the Prep League Championship. With these numbers and this team spirit, our collective cheering couldn’t be louder. Go Cubs!
