The tradition lives on! ‘Red and White Day’ is the new ‘Brown and White Day’

It had come down to the final game of Mayfield’s Second Annual Red and White Day. The White Team lead the Red by only five points.
Red and White had just completed two grueling hours on the North Lawn—old-fashioned gunny-sack races and tug-of-war, and slew of weird games in which they wrapped themselves in sheets, passed around soaking wet sponges and ran around cones.

They were hot. They were thirsty. They were pumped up and feeling competitive entering the gym for the grand finale, the Senior Obstacle Course, worth 20 points.

Senior Class President and Red Team member Carmen Mascarenas ’18 rallied her team, the defending 2017 champions.

“I want you all to put your TEAM FIRST,” Carmen shouted. “Right now I want the most coordinated people down here! This is no time for egos.”.

Let’s digress for a moment here, before the final game starts.

Red and White Day is actually the wildly popular version of Brown and White Day of decades ago. Note to our beloved alums: little has changed except the colors. The girls decided they liked red and white, though, because they are our “spirit” colors.

Dean of Students Steve Bergen resurrected the tradition last year after student council members were puzzled by the Brown and White championship banner in the gym. A little research revealed the rich history—and the girls were, shall we say, game!

“Our girls need to know that Mayfield is meant to be a lot of things—a safe place, an excellent education, inspiring and yes, fun,” Mr. Bergen said. “This falls at a really good time in the year when spring break seems far off. Games, dancing, wacky dress-up themes remind us how important it is to build strong friendships and make lifelong memories.”

Yes, but…

“If we want to win, I want the best people down here!” Carmen told Red team members, as 10 seniors prepared themselves for the game.

The Senior Obstacle Course included about 10 minutes of hurdles, jump rope, belly sliding on a roller board and running. Rock music blasted and deafening cheers pulsated off the walls.

In the final runs the Red Team surged ahead—and won! Final score: Red 185, White 175.

Kat Lopez ’18 took the long view of it all.

“This just shows what a great community we are Mayfield,” Kat said. “It’s one way for all the girls to bond across grade levels.”

She paused and cracked a sly smile.

“And we all like the competition.”
