Mayfield artists honored at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

The works of five outstanding Mayfield visual and photography artists will take a place of honor at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels for the annual Robert Graham Memorial Exhibit that celebrates select work of Catholic high school students.
Congratulations to Olivia Salazar ’21, Ellie Parisi ’18 and Kate Winchel ’18 from the Visual Arts Conservatory, and Christine Diaz ’18 and Caitlin Trombatore ’18 from the Photography Conservatory.

Our Mayfield artists will gather at the Cathedral for a special Mass to celebrate the opening of the exhibit on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. All are welcome to view the exhibition, which will be on view through Sunday, April 8, 2018. It is named in honor of the late sculptor Robert Graham, who designed the Cathedral’s Great Bronze Doors.

Visual Arts Conservatory instructor Theresia Kleeman said our students have “created amazing artwork that embodies their sense of spirituality.” She and Photography Conservatory instructor Paul Tzanetopoulos expressed their great pride in our artists and said their pieces reflect the passion, talent and dedication they apply to their conservatory work.

Each student wrote a personal reflection (below) on the spiritual signficance of their work. You can see each piece in the gallery on the right.

Spirit of Curiosity, 2017
Acrylic on canvas
My faith guides my life, from artwork to future aspirations. Centered around the human trait of curiosity, outer space bleeds through the gaps with scenes from earth, showing how the natural world constantly inspires our search of knowledge and experience. My incessant fascination with the natural world is what incites me to pursue scientific research as a career. Besides serving as an ode to creation, my art is further inspired by the idea that beauty points to truth, and therefore also to God, motivating me to discover and capture the beautiful in everything I paint or draw.

Extramundane
“Extramundane” represents the importance of Jesus’ presence in our lives. The dark shadows create a silhouette of two crosses, which remind us of the two others who died beside Jesus. The shadows are out of focus to symbolize that Jesus is our primary focus, along with being the light of our world.

Rosaire
“Rosaire” portrays the significance of strengthening our personal relationship with God. This form of prayer and devotion reminds us of Jesus’ sacrifice and love. “Rosaire” is representative of the belief that we are brought closer to God by holding and praying the rosary.

Untitled, 2018
Digital print
Words are powerful tools, to me they have become an action in their own way. Through St. Catherine’s beautiful words, I have found motivation to share my gifts and turn to words as I find myself moving into the next chapter of life. Words have provided me with understanding of myself and through this understanding of myself, I have learned how to understand and embrace others and their gifts.

Creative Freedom, 2017
Mixed media on canvas
This piece was inspired by society’s past attempts at making me conform to the systematic status quo, by covering up the beautiful, colorful, chaos that is my spirit. The hand and color breaking out from underneath the black and white paper represent my soul ripping free of their black and white, cookie cutter expectations, demonstrating my refusal to be the same and showing what truly makes me fly underneath. My spirit will never be able to conform to a uniform image of what I should be because I was born to shine.

I am looking forward to seeing all the great works by Mayfield and other schools at the Cathedral. I went last year and it was very inspiring.
