But how are our fine Mayfield Instrumental Conservatory musicians holding up this week? Are they ready for a full slate of three Christmas concerts in different venues before hundreds of listeners?

Yes! And they are strategizing how to deal with a touch of the jitters as the big dates approach, culminating in what is expected to be a packed Pike Auditorium for our beloved Carol Night on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.

“When we are here practicing in our space I’m not afraid to make a mistake; I know we are all together,” said Zoe Cerrillo ’19. “But I am just a little bit nervous for these other big spaces where things are not as controlled.”

Yet our Mayfield instrumentalists, under the direction of Christin Hablewitz, have been pushing beyond their comfort zone to learn more about ensemble playing as the prepare to show off their skills and bring some musical cheer to family and friends. As part of their conservatory training they have swapped instruments for several songs—a guitarist playing the marimba, a flutist trying her hands on the drums.

“So what should you do if you make a mistake?” Ms. Hablewitz asked. “Don’t make a face. Keep going. Let it go and move straight on.”

Instrumentalists will collaborate with Mayfield's Women’s Ensemble for two of our major concerts, as our signature Conservatory for the Arts program showcases the hard work and talents of our performers.

As part of their “Actions Not Words” spirit, the Instrumental Conservatory will kick off their Christmas concert series with a performance at the Scholl Canyon Estates Retirement Community, followed by accompaniment with the Women’s Ensemble on Sunday and finally our Mayfield community-wide Carol Night.

We hope your can join our Mayfield students as the play and sing their hearts out for us this Christmas season.
