The future of Mayfield athletics is bright!

The season is well underway and as expected, our spring sports are off to strong starts. The largest Softball team in years also happens to be one of the youngest: 3 Juniors and Seniors out of the 22 Cubs on the team. Despite the inexperience, the Cubs are off to a great start with two nice non-league wins this week over San Marino (12-9) on Wednesday and Alhambra (8-7) yesterday. The Cubs now sit at 5-2 on the season with a big early season matchup on Monday against Flintridge Prep. Based on early season results, it looks like Prep, Providence, and Mayfield are the class of the Prep League, so Monday's game will be a solid test for the Cubs.

Track & Field opened their league season with the 1st Prep League cluster meet on Tuesday.  The Cubs won four events on the day and placed 3rd overall in the meet, scoring 55 points (Westridge won the meet with 77 points). Cub winners on the day were Liz Goethals '23 (Discus); Sissy Page '25 (High Jump); Alyssa Gallardo '23, Sade Falese ’23, Monika Vargas '25, and Goethals (4 X 100 Relay); and Cecilia Kvochak '23, Jayde Lim '24, Leah Whitfield '26, and Goethals once again (4 X 400 relay). The team's top performers will compete today and tomorrow in the prestigious Nike Redondo Invitational.

The Swimming & Diving teams traveled down Orange Grove to take on new league foe Maranatha. Both teams came away with huge victories to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Cubs were led by four-event winners Holly Gmelich '23, Kate Georgino '25 and Sophia Georgino '25. The JV team is off from meets until March 21, but the Varsity team will travel to northern California next weekend to take on some of the best teams in the state in the 33rd Annual De La Salle Invitational.

Badminton has the week off from matches, but will travel to San Marino for a scrimmage next week.

It was exciting to see all of the future Cubs getting their new Mayfield sweatshirts last night.  We have a talented group of current students joining us next year. And we want you all to welcome our new volleyball coach, Ryan Duncan, to the Mayfield family. The future of Mayfield Athletics looks very bright! GO CUBS!
