The Cubs seek to end a 33-year Prep League drought

As we enter the final week of the winter sports regular season, one Cubs team is on the verge of history. Mayfield has not won a league title in soccer since the 1989-1990 season—the first and only team that went on to win the Cubs CIF soccer Championship in school history (so far). Last year's team came oh-so-close to ending the 30+ year drought. A late season tie left the Cubs 1/2 game out of a tie for the title with Flintridge Prep. At this point in the season, Mayfield and Flintridge Prep have established themselves as the two best teams in the Prep League with one week to go. Two weeks ago the Wolves defeated the Cubs 2-1 in the first of two games this season between the rivals. However, Prep has tied two other games in league, so as we enter the final week, the Cubs have 21 points to the Wolves 20. What that means is Monday's matchup between two of the best teams in the San Gabriel Valley will determine the Prep League champion. The Cubs will need a win or a tie in the game to end the 33-year drought while a Flintridge Prep win would give the Wolves the title. The game will be held at San Marino High School at 5:30 p.m. this Monday night. The Cubs hope for a HUGE turnout from our community. We also will honor our members of the Class of 2023 next week. The JV game at Oxy on Tuesday and the Varsity game on Thursday at Oxy will serve as the final home game for nine seniors who have taken our soccer program to new heights. We hope to have a loud contingent at both games.
Thursday night will also be Senior Night for two members of the Varsity basketball team as the Cubs close out their season hosting Westridge in the Cubs Cave. The young basketball team has continued their struggle in a very tough Prep League. Mayfield's JV team will host Rio Hondo Prep on Monday before both teams finish with Westridge. The Cubs will try to end their season on a high note by beating the rival Tigers.

Water Polo picked up a nice non-league win, 14-12, on Wednesday over San Marino on the road. The Cubs close out their season with games today at Pasadena Poly, Monday at Chadwick, and Wednesday at Brentwood. The team has been building its momentum all season and look to set up a strong campaign next year by going out on a winning streak this year.

Spring tryouts are right around the corner, but there are still some big games this season. We hope to see you at a Senior Night game this week and EVERYONE should be at San Marino on Monday night for the Varsity soccer game. GO CUBS!
