Senior Nights and important games filling the Cubs Calendar

With only two weeks of the winter sports regular season remaining, the games are taking on added importance as the Cubs make a push for league titles and playoff berths. And tomorrow, believe it or not, we have our first Senior Night of the winter season as the Water Polo team will honor Class of 2023 members Carla Martinez ’23, Karina Norton ’23 and Tillie VanAken ’23, playing in their final home game against Occidental at 4:00 p.m. The Cubs dropped two heartbreakers this week, losing to Louisville by two on Wednesday and then to Westridge by only one goal last night. With five league games in the next 12 days, Water Polo still controls its destiny in the fight for one of the Prep League's four playoff spots, but the Cubs will have to win at least three of the matches to have a chance.

Basketball teams have been equally busy. Both teams lost tough games on the road at Westridge on Tuesday night before hosting a very talented Flintridge Prep team in the Cubs Cave last night. The Wolves are ranked #2 in CIF in their division and are one of the top teams in the San Gabriel Valley and they showed why last night. The JV team put up a good fight, but lost to the Wolves as well. Varsity closes out their week with another game in our gym this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against Rio Hondo Prep.

Soccer continued their winning ways, with Varsity defeating Pasadena Poly on the road, 3-1, on Tuesday. The Cubs will host Providence at Occidental today and hope to remain on pace for another monumental clash with Flintridge Prep on Jan. 30 for the Prep League title. The JV team played at Prep yesterday on a cold, wet field, and battled the Wolves to the end, before coming up short in their game. Both teams are very talented and show why Mayfield's Soccer program is considered one of the best in the area.

With Senior Nights and important games filling the Cubs Calendar, there is no better time to come out to cheer on our wonderful student-athletes. We hope to see you at a game soon wearing your Mayfield red and yelling for our girls. GO CUBS!
