Mayfield's fall sports teams continue to show strength

Despite the more moderate temperatures, Mayfield's fall sports teams continued their hot starts to the season. Perhaps the hottest team has been the Frosh/Soph volleyball team. After today's straight set victory over Providence on the road, the team stands at 14-2 overall, 7-0 in league, and in 1st place. This was after the Cubs performed wonderfully in last weekend's Crescenta Valley tournament. In the tourney the Cubs defeated South Pasadena, Maranatha, La Cañada, and the host CV team before falling in the Championship game of the Gold Division to Chaminade. The Cubs have won 26 of the 30 sets they have played this year. The success on the court has also spread to the JV and Varsity programs. The Varsity team stands at 8-1 overall and 6-0 in league as the Cubs swept Providence in three straight sets tonight. Meanwhile, the JV Cubs are now 9-1 overall and 7-0 in league and will compete in the CV tournament themselves tomorrow.
Cross Country ran last evening in the largest meet in the country at Irvine Woodbridge. The Cubs Varsity team placed 9th (out of 22 schools) and were led by Cecilia Kvochak ’23 (40th), Lauren Hoshek ’26 (48th), and Sophie Limongelli ’25 (52nd) who had 164 runners in their race alone. Two JV teams ran great races as well, as the Cubs placed 7th (out of 40) in the Novice race and 7th (out of 15) in the Girls JV race.

The tennis teams had not played a match in over two weeks due to the extreme heat, but that ended yesterday as both teams picked up solid wins. The Varsity Cubs netted a 12-6 non league victory over Louisville led by Samantha Frick's ’23 three victories in singles and Sarah Leiva ’25 & Rory Rago's ’24 three victories in doubles. Coming off a 2021 season that saw the Cubs share a league title with both Pasadena Poly AND Westridge, competition for the 2022 title should be intense. Now sporting a 2-0 record (after four matches were canceled due to the heat), the Cubs will open league play with a big one—against Westridge at Muir HS on Tuesday.  The JV team will also open league play against Westridge on Tuesday after their thrilling victory yesterday over FSHA. The JV Cubs pulled out a 9-7 victory over the Tologs to improve their record to 2-0 as well.

The golf team opened Prep League play this week against a very talented Buckley team.  Mayfield fell in the match and dropped to 0-3 this season but the young Cubs team continues to improve drastically and will take on 1st place Westridge on Tuesday.

The Cubs will have another busy week next week, and our teams love when there are fans in the stands. Make sure you check the website for our updated schedules and come out and cheer on Mayfield to victory! GO CUBS!
