Mostly smiles, some tears, and a whole lot of winning

Our spring regular season came to an end this week with mostly smiles, some tears, and a whole lot of winning. The week started off last Saturday with the Varsity Swim & Dive team winning their 2nd consecutive Prep League title and the JV team winning their 17th straight championship. The Cubs said goodbye to Seniors Lucia Avila ‘22, Avalon Bajarias ‘22, Taylor Carey ‘22, Katelin Echeverria ‘22, Emma Franco ‘22, Audrey Leung ‘22 and Alexa Valenzuela ‘22.  The Varsity team's score of 392 points is the most that any Prep League school has ever scored in the nearly 40 year history of the meet. Event winners included Morgan Burns ‘25 (Diving), Taylor Carey ‘22 (100 Breaststroke), and the 200 Medley Relay team of Taylor Carey, Kate Georgino ‘25, Sophia Georgino ‘25, and Holly Gmelich ‘23, whose winning time broke a 20-year old school record. JV winners included Frances Aguirre ‘25, Kayley Bao ‘24, Delilah Dudas ‘24, Kate Grinnell ‘23, Zora Hinrichs ‘23, Ava Kook ‘24 and Alexa Valenzuela ‘23. The team qualified for CIF in nine individual events and all three relays and will compete at the CIF meet in Mission Viejo next week.
Not to be outdone, just three days later the Track & Field team won their 7th consecutive Prep League Championship with a resounding victory on Tuesday night. The Cubs 163.5 points well outpaced their nearest league rivals Flintridge Prep (79 pts.) and Chadwick (76). And a daunting fact for the rest of the league....the Cubs have NO SENIORS on the team and everyone will return in 2023. Winners on the day included Sade Falese ‘23 (Long Jump), Liz Goethals ‘23 (Discus), Sissy Page ‘25 (High Jump), Monika Vargas ‘25 (100 & 300 hurdles) and the Prep League Track Athlete of the Year, Cecilia Kvochak ‘23, who won the 800 & 1600. The Cubs won both relays for good measure with Alyssa Gallardo ‘23 and Maddie Bewick ‘25 combining with Falese and Goethals to win the 400 Relay and Jayde Lim ‘24 and Natalie Miera ‘23 teaming up with Kvochak and Page to win the 1600 relay. The Cubs will have a large contingent competing at next weekend's CIF Prelims—final attendees will be announced this weekend.

On Wednesday night, the Cubs softball team concluded their regular season with a 10-0 thrashing of league rival Pasadena Poly. The win capped off an 8-4, 3rd place finish in the Prep League and qualified the Cubs for the CIF playoffs beginning next week. Seniors Maria Dilbeck ’22, Caitlin Dopudja ‘22, Jamie Pernecky ‘22 and Emily Vargas ‘22 finished their career in fashion as the Cubs "mercied" the Panthers. The CIF brackets will be released tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. and the Cubs will find out their opponent and site as they hope to make a long run in the playoffs.

Last night, the Badminton team played their final home game of the year, and it was thrilling.  Playing in the most competitive badminton league in the state is often a huge challenge for the inexperienced Loyola and Mayfield Cubs resulting in frequent lopsided scores. However, last night showed just how far this young team has come as the Cubs fell 12-9 to San Gabriel in a nailbiter. Once again the Class of 2022: Sofie Figueroa ‘22, Natalie Hanna ‘22, Wenxi Wang ‘22, Iris Yoo ‘22 and Kerry Zhang ‘22 and Hayden Crawford, Tim O'Hara, Andrew Pribe, and Sam Salseda played inspired badminton. The Cubs are in a terrific position for success in the gym for years to come with a large team that truly learned so much this season.

While we close the book on another successful regular season, three teams, softball, swim/dive, and track/field, will all be competing in the CIF playoffs in the next week. With so many talented Cubs, it looks like Mayfield will be playing for much longer this season. Come cheer on the Cubs in the playoffs....GO CUBS!
