Head's Weekly Message — April 22, 2022

Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter celebration filled with joy and beauty. I always feel so blessed to live in Southern California but especially during the springtime. Our City of Roses is certainly putting on a particularly stunning display this year. Like many—I plan to visit the Huntington Gardens this weekend to take in all the rose glory!

Spending time experiencing the healing and sacred nature of the outdoors is particularly appropriate as we recognized today—April 22—as Earth Day. Yesterday, students in the Sustainability Club partnered with the Campus Ministry Council to present an inspiring prayer service dedicated to raising awareness about our responsibility to protect God’s creation. We were reminded of Pope Francis’ call to action in his 2015 Encyclical "Laudato Si” in which the Holy Father challenges us all to understand that care for our environment is inextricably linked to global justice. Pointing out the urgency of the problem he wrote, “Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last 200 years.” And calling us to action, he continued, “A great cultural, spiritual, and educational challenge stands before us, and it will demand that we set out on the long path of renewal.”

I share Pope Francis’ strong belief that real hope lies in the commitment and dedication of our young people. This is clearly evident at Mayfield as our students are leading the way in helping us all take our responsibilities seriously. I am particularly excited about a new student-driven composting initiative which will afford all of us a new way to lower our carbon footprint. I am very much looking forward to participating in this important project starting next Friday!

I am also very much looking forward to spending today with our amazing freshman class at their retreat. I know this will be a time for me to witness their leadership development, their spiritual growth, and their love for one another. I know we will all have a lot of fun too.

Finally, please mark your calendars for some wonderful events coming up next weekend. Our final dance concert of the year “The Music Never Stops” is scheduled for April 28 to April 30 (reserve tickets at boxoffice@mayfieldsenior.org) as well as our beloved Mother-Daughter Mass and Bruch next Sunday when I hope to see many of you on our beautiful, rose-filled campus.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
