Head's Weekly Message — March 4, 2022

Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,

“Gentleness, kindness, and great patience may keep all in peace.” These words of our Founder, Cornelia Connelly in many ways sum up my experience over the past two years as a member of our Mayfield community. As they served as the theme of our Ash Wednesday Liturgy, these words will also serve as the theme of my own 2022 Lenten journey. It is with a heart so full of gratitude that I give thanks for the gentleness, kindness and great patience we have all worked so hard to maintain. This commitment has made our community stronger, more united, and more loving despite all the challenges we have faced—a true blessing beyond measure.

As we turn an important corner in our COVID-19 journey as a community, I am thrilled to let you know that starting on Monday, March 14—exactly two years since our last day of “normal”—our community will no longer be required to wear masks at school. While the Pasadena Department of Health continues to strongly encourage masking—this decision will be left up to the discretion of families. (Please look over Nurse Cota’s overview of this change.) At Mayfield, we will honor everyone’s choice either to mask or not in accordance with Health Department rules. We will also continue to follow all our practices to minimize risk including enhanced ventilation. In addition, we are reviewing our testing protocols in the light of this news. We have already decided that it will be best to require home testing before returning to campus after Spring Break. Additional information will be provided, and we will be sending test kits home with all students on March 14 for your convenience.

I am so looking forward to seeing more of our students’ faces in the very near future. I am also thrilled that this afternoon admissions decisions will be sent out for the Mayfield Senior Class of 2026! We will be having a welcome event for our newest Cubs on March 10—but in the meantime, we thank you so much for encouraging families you know to say yes to our offer. We have chosen these students carefully for all their amazing gifts, and we can’t wait to see them on campus.

I also can’t wait to see many of you tomorrow evening. After so much planning and hard work—it is finally time for our amazing 2022 Benefit: “A Night in Monte Carlo.”  Let’s get out our sparkles and get ready to have a wonderful time raising money for our beloved students.

And please, do yourselves a great favor and mark your calendar for our upcoming musical—“The Wizard of Oz.” It is opening on Thursday, March 10 and continuing with shows through the weekend. I can’t wait to see our students on the stage and under the lights.

Finally, I know you all join me with prayers for peace and safety for Ukraine. May our Heavenly Father protect and defend our brothers and sisters in their time of need.

With Love and Gratitude,
Kate Morin
