Head's Weekly Message — Feb. 18, 2021

Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,

I hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day and especially enjoyed the Rams’ big Super Bowl win! I returned to Pasadena on Wednesday evening from Palo Alto, where I was participating as a member of the CAIS accreditation visiting team for the Castilleja School. I had such an interesting time meeting with other girls’ school educators and learning about Castilleja's innovative programs—but I’m also so happy to be back on our beautiful campus. There is no place like home!

Gaining perspective from visiting another school always makes me so grateful for our Mayfield community. I’m particularly thrilled to let you know that our Strub Hall renovation project is progressing on (or even a bit ahead of) schedule. We will start preparing the campus for graduation in early May when we will be resodding our lawns so we will have lush green grass by the first of June. We are planning to have our traditional graduation ceremony with all the joy and excitement it will bring. I know it will be absolutely beautiful!

I am also so grateful that the COVID-19 case numbers continue to decline—so much so that the outside mask mandate at schools has been lifted. It is such a joy to see our students’ faces again, and I’m so happy that they can get a real break from their masks outside during the day.

It was so wonderful that our students were able to show their gratitude for our area health care workers by participating in Gratitude Week at Huntington Hospital. Partnering with the Christ Child Society, our students helped make, package and deliver over 11,000 cookies to give these amazing heroes a special treat!

My heart was also filled with gratitude yesterday when our entire school participated in an amazing Black History Month program. We were each able to choose two mini-seminars to attend from among nineteen fascinating options. United through the theme of health and wellness–focusing on “joy as resistance”–I had the honor to hear from two different Mayfield alums on how important it is for all of us to keep a positive attitude about ourselves and others—truly inspirational!

And what about our soccer Cubs?!?! After a decisive first round victory last Saturday under the lights at St. Francis High School—our team went on to win again on Wednesday in Ventura.  Tomorrow, we will be hosting Paraclete High School from Lancaster on our home Occidental College turf at 3:00 p.m. for a big quarterfinal game. Let’s all show up in our red and white to support our amazing team. Go Cubs!

Finally, I would like to encourage all of you to support our school in another way and to invite you to our upcoming benefit—A Night in Monte Carlo! I am so looking forward to getting all dressed up for a really fun party. With delicious food and drink and lots of wonderful treasures to bid on—it will be a night to remember.

Hoping you all enjoy a lovely, long Presidents’ Day Weekend.
With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
