Head's Weekly Message — Feb. 11, 2022

Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,

What a fabulous Spirit Week this has been at Mayfield Senior School! Words cannot really describe how wonderful it is just to have fun together again on campus. I think everyone really enjoyed all the themed dressing up—such creativity and a lot of “thinking outside the box.”  I loved it.

I especially loved yesterday’s class dance competition—sheer joy. I was amazed by the complexity and intricacy of the performances pulled together in such a short period of time with such exuberance. Now I’m really looking forward to today’s Red Team vs White Team Spirit Games—can’t wait to see who wins!

It was also so amazing to celebrate an important milestone in our Strub renovation project—the final shotcrete application for our seismic reinforcement. Yesterday the faculty, staff, and members of our Board of Trustees were invited to sign the new shear wall in my office as we celebrated with cupcakes and a toast. We are so grateful for everyone’s patience and support as we enter the homestretch of this project filled with love.

Over the weekend, we have lots to look forward to. This evening will be a particularly fun date night for Skip and me as we celebrate and support our amazing conservatory program at Hearts for Arts. With a Beatles’ theme “All You Need is Love” I know it’s going to be an awesome pre-Valentine’s Day treat, and I hope to see many of you there!

I also hope to see many of you tomorrow afternoon at our soccer playoff game against Shadow Hills High School scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at St. Francis High School in La Cañada. Our soccer Cubs are coming off an amazing and historic win over Flintridge Prep last Saturday—so we have a great deal to celebrate. Go CUBS!!!

On Sunday afternoon, I’m heading up to the Bay Area to participate in an accreditation visit for the Castilleja School in Palo Alto. I always learn so much through these visits—but I will be sad to miss our first all-school liturgy of 2022 on Monday in honor of our beloved founder Cornelia Connelly. We will be welcoming Fr. Dorian Llywelyn, SJ, President of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at USC, to campus as our celebrant. Fr. Dorian is a wonderful participant on our Board’s Mission Committee, and I know our community will be so inspired by his presence and his words.

Luckily, I will be back on campus for Thursday’s Black History month assembly. We are so excited to welcome a number of alums and other notable speakers to campus for a program of uplifting and informative presentations.

I’m also excited to celebrate our Athletes on Thursday evening for our Winter Sports Banquet.  Our Cubs had another amazing season—I could not be prouder of their grit, determination and sportswomanship.

Finally, I want to draw your attention to two additional opportunities coming up next week.  First, please join in our third quarterly “Inspire” Zoom presentation on Monday at 5:00pm when we will hear from Sharon and David Hoover—Founders and Spiritual Advisors of Inscape Ministries. Lastly, please consider contributing to the Cookie Drive in honor of our amazing health-care workers at Huntington Hospital. We have been asked to bring in three dozen homemade cookies to be packed and distributed to these amazing heroes!

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
