Adjusting to COVID-19 regulations, Cubs are still showing strength

With the surge of COVID-19 across the county, high school sports took a big hit this week. Most of our games were canceled this week and will have to be rescheduled. However, last night we had our first competition of 2022 as the JV basketball hosted Duarte in the gym. The Cubs jumped all over the Falcons from the start and won the game 52-5. Coach Malissa Balderama '09 has the JV Cubs playing very well this year and the team is now 5-2 overall, and 1-1 in league. Mayfield will play at Poly on Monday in a league game against the Panthers.

This evening another team kicks off the new year as the Cubs water polo team will host Brentwood at 5:15 at Occidental in a Prep League match. Mayfield stands at 6-6 overall and 2-1 in Prep League play. Coach Ellie Karl '15 has taken a team of girls who had never played the sport before and turned them into one of the better teams in the area.

The soccer teams have not played since before Christmas Break and unfortunately had all of their games postponed this week. However, the Varsity team received some big news. After winning their group for the first time ever in the “Best in the West” Tournament on December 18, the Cubs earned a #3 ranking in the latest CIF Division 4 poll. This Tuesday, the Cubs host league favorite Flintridge Prep in one of the biggest soccer games in memory. The Cubs have one league title in school history (back in 1990), but look to make a historical run in 2022.

Many schools protocols have been adjusted due to the increase in cases, however, Mayfield is still permitting spectators at this time and we also livestream all of our home games in the gym on the NFHS Network. Since it is difficult these days to get to a game, another great way to support Cubs Athletics is by donating to the Mayfield Booster Club. These funds are used to get much needed equipment for our athletes.

We are looking forward to a great 2022....GO CUBS!
