The Cubs’ playoff run continues with a CIF semifinal at home tomorrow night—see you there!

Sports tryouts week usually means the athletic calendar is quiet as we gear up for a new season. That's what I figured this week would look like when we put our calendar together in the spring—boy was I wrong. You know it was a good week when you have to make repeated calls to former Mayfield coaching guru Helen Wade to ask about the accomplishments of teams from nearly 40 years ago!
Our tennis team entered the CIF playoffs under the radar, despite winning their first Prep League title since 2017. In fact, the Cubs had to win a wildcard match just to qualify for the CIF playoffs. But once they did...what a run it was! Tennis was in back-to-back-to-back matches 10-8 to advance to their first CIF Semifinal since 1988! The unranked Cubs eliminated the #3 and #6 teams in CIF before finally falling to #2 Sunny Hills in a thriller. It was a wonderful two-week run for the girls and their fans, and the team is already looking forward to chasing a title again in 2022!

Cross country wrapped their season up this morning with a lone Cub, Cecilia Kvochak '23, running in the sweltering Walnut heat at the famous Mt. SAC course. Cecilia ran her best race of the year, placing 19th (in a field of over 100+ runners) in a lightning fast time of 21:02. The Cubs season ends, but with no graduating seniors on the team, the future is certainly bright for the Mayfield cross country team.

The one fall team still competing—and it doesn't look like they're finishing anytime soon—is the volleyball team. Despite falling in the CIF Semifinals two weeks ago, the Cubs qualified for the California State Playoffs for just the fourth time in school history. Each of the previous three times (from 2007-2009) the Cubs won their opening game and fell in the second round of the playoffs.  This year the Cubs swept Kerman High School of Fresno on Tuesday night at home and then last night the Cubs traveled to eight-time State Champion Francis Parker of San Diego. The Lancers took a tight opening set, 26-24, before Mayfield stormed back to sweep the next three sets and qualify for the California Regional Semifinals for the first time in school history! Tomorrow night the Cubs will host the semifinal game on campus against El Camino Real at 6:00 p.m. We hope you will help us pack the gym for the game by purchasing your tickets here. The Cubs are two wins from the State Championship game and a loud gym is the best way to support our girls!

Another wonderful way to support all of our athletes is through our Booster Club Christmas Tree Store—make sure you buy your trees, garland and wreaths TODAY!

Lots to be excited about these days, and next week we start games for all three of our winter sports teams—basketball, soccer and water polo. Make sure to check the Cubs Calendar on the website for updated games and come on out and cheer on your Cubs!

GO CUBS!
