Yet another historic week for Mayfield!

Back in August, I knew it would be great to be back on campus with a full slate of fall sports—but I had no idea how successful our fall sports teams would be! Each week it seems like the Cubs are doing things that we have not done in years, and this week has been yet another historic week for Mayfield.

After honoring Ashley Huang ’22 on Tuesday at her final JV tennis match of her career, the Cubs Varsity tennis team participated in the Prep League Tennis Tournament Championship at Scholl Canyon on Wednesday. Our doubles teams of Michelle Cheng ‘22 & Anna Kingston ‘24 and Sarah Leiva ‘25 & Rory Rago ‘24 both played well in their matches before falling, as did Sheryl Cheng ‘23 in her singles matches. However, the day belonged to junior student Samantha Frick ‘23. After losing in the final as a freshman, Frick came back to win the tournament last year during her sophomore campaign. Then on Wednesday she swept through her competition, winning the final match 6-4 over her opponent from Chadwick. Frick becomes the first tennis player in league history to win back-to-back championships as well as the first ever to win two titles in her career. Frick and her team find out on Monday where they will open the CIF playoffs as a team next week. However, by winning the league title once again, Frick has qualified herself for the CIF Individual Sectionals on Nov. 22. Her amazing Cubs career just keeps getting better and better!

Our Varsity volleyball team kept us on the edge of our seats on Wednesday night, too! The Cubs hosted Redlands in a CIF Quarterfinal match and seemed well on their way to victory, cruising through the first two sets with relative ease. However, the Terriers came roaring back, winning the third and fourth sets and surging to a 7-2 lead in the fifth and final set. The Cubs closed the match on a 8-1 run, and clinched the match with a 15-12 victory! The win puts the Cubs in tomorrow's CIF Semifinals, a place they haven't been since 2013—when the Cubs lost in the Finals. Tomorrow the #2 ranked Cubs will travel to take on the #3 ranked Huskies of Chino Hills in a 6:00 p.m. game. You can buy your tickets here. The game should be a great test and we hope to see many of you cheering on the Cubs or following along on Twitter @msscubs. Win or lose, the Cubs have qualified for the CIF State Volleyball tournament, which begins on Nov. 9.

Tomorrow Mayfield will host the Prep League Cross Country Championships at Pierce College. Our JV Cubs will get things started with an 8:35 a.m. race and Varsity will follow with their race at 9:25 a.m.! Come out to Pierce or follow along on @msscubs for live updates!

The excitement on campus will only increase next week as our winter sports (basketball, soccer, and water polo) get started. As the calendar turns to November and we get closer to the Christmas season, you can still buy your Christmas tree, garland and wreaths from the Booster Christmas Store! The deadline to order is Friday, Nov. 12—so don't delay!!

Have a great Halloween weekend and GO CUBS!
