When winning a league championship might be considered a team's second-biggest achievement of the week...
Some periods of time are quiet on the athletics front and there just isn’t as much to report from the sidelines. But today is not that day! It’s basically unheard of that winning a league championship might be considered a team's second-biggest achievement of the week. But that describes our volleyball season right now. On Tuesday night, the Cubs traveled to La Canada and defeated Flintridge Prep in straight sets to finish 11-1 in the Prep League and win their first league championship since 2018.
The Cubs were dominant all season long, winning 33 sets in league and only losing three. The Cubs were joined by the JV team, who also won Prep League by sweeping the Wolves on Tuesday. It was a great day for Cubs volleyball—then came Wednesday! The Cubs traveled to FSHA for our 4th annual Dig Pink volleyball match to benefit the Jim & Eleanor Randall Breast Center. It has become a great annual tradition with the two schools giving thousands of dollars to breast cancer research each year. However, the volleyball itself has been relatively one-sided in the past years, with FSHA winning every year. In fact, the Cubs had only taken one set from FSHA. When the Tologs won the first two tightly contested sets (25-23, 27-25), it looked as if the Cubs would go down once again. However, the Cubs won a dramatic third set (25-23), dominated the fourth (25-16), and then, after trailing 7-6 in the fifth (and final!) set, the Cubs rattled off nine straight points and won in a thrilling 15-7 final. The Cubs fans who stayed until the end rushed the court and celebrated with the team and coaching staff! It marked the Cubs’ first win over FSHA in a regulation match since the mid-1990s. The win caps the Cubs’ regular season, finishing 27-10 overall and 11-1 in league. The Cubs will now open the CIF playoffs this Thursday night as one of the top seeds in CIF Division 5, looking for their first title in 12 years. Joining the Varsity in winning “on the hill” was the JV team, who ended their season by winning their three-set match, 2-1 over the Tologs, and the Frosh/Soph team who swept FSHA 2-0. It was quite a night for the Cubs, but the Varsity team hopes to be playing for a few more weeks!
It would be hard for any team to compete with that kind of drama, but the tennis team kept pace with the volleyball team in their matches with Westridge and Poly this week. On Tuesday, the Cubs lost a heartbreaking match, 10-8, to the Tigers in a rematch of a nail-biter from last month. The Cubs led most of the day, but Mayfield's #2 singles player suffered an ankle injury in her final match and the Cubs could not recover. Then yesterday at Occidental, the Cubs hosted first-place Poly. The last time the two teams met, the Cubs were undefeated and ranked #10 in CIF. Poly squeaked out a 10-8 win over the Cubs in September, knocking Mayfield out of first place. The Cubs returned the favor yesterday with great performances from both the singles teams and doubles teams, who each won five matches on the day, giving the Cubs a 10-8 victory over previously undefeated Poly. The Cubs can still win a share of the league championship if Westridge defeats Poly next week. The JV team also picked up a great win yesterday, defeating Poly 11-7 at PCC. Both teams have one more match to go and will honor their seniors in the coming weeks.
The Cubs golf team played its final regular season match on Tuesday, falling to Providence. The Cubs were led by our Athlete of the Week, Amy Baum '22, who had the low score of the day for both teams on the challenging course in Burbank. Amy and her classmate, Kate Thompson ’22, will compete in the Prep League Finals this Tuesday at Almansor Golf Course in Alhambra.
Last Saturday, the Cubs cross country team had their best meet of the season at the Santa Clarita Valley Invitational. The Varsity team finished third overall in their race with Cecilia Kvochak ’23 taking sixth to pace the Cubs. The JV team also ran well, placing seventh overall with Bella Villavicencio ’25 leading the way with a 12th-place finish.
CIF will release the volleyball brackets tomorrow morning and we hope that you will come out to a playoff game to cheer on the Cubs. Tickets will be sold online through the GoFan site—I will send more details out on Monday.
