A terrific blend of experience and ability in our fall sports

The Cubs continued playing well with all four sports in action this past week and one team continuing its best start ever. The Varsity tennis team looks to have a terrific blend of experience and ability as the team improved to 6-0 on the season with two more wins this week over Immaculate Heart (13-5) and Marshall (16-2). The Cubs have another non-league match on Tuesday at Buckley before opening Prep League play against the defending league champion Westridge Tigers. Coach Silvana Stans has the Cubs playing great tennis early in the season and with Samantha Frick ’23, Sheryl Cheng ’23 and Rebecca Leiva ’22 leading the way, the Cubs have been unbeatable up to this point.

Not to be outdone, the Volleyball teams went undefeated this week as well. After all three teams lost on the road at Poly last Friday, the Frosh-Soph team participated in the Crescenta Valley (CV) tournament on Saturday and came away with a third-place finish in the gold bracket. Led by Christine Ellis ’25—who was awarded 1st Team All-Tournament—the Cubs eliminated host CV in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Arcadia in the semifinals, 28-26, in a thrilling match. This week all three teams swept Providence on the road on Wednesday and Flintridge Prep in the Cubs Cave yesterday. Once again, the Cubs were led by last week's Athlete of the Week, Maddie Kaufman ’22, who helped guide the Cubs to straight set victories over both the Pioneers and the Wolves. The JV team will take part in the CV tournament tomorrow.

The cross country and golf teams continue to grow and improve with each week. Beset by injuries, the cross country team had a skeleton squad compete in the Prep League cluster meet this week, but the girls who were able to run shined on Tuesday at Griffith Park. Clare Kvochak ’24 and Jayde Lim ’24 were the Cubs’ top finishers and ran with great energy in the high heat. The golf team opened league play against Westridge and Chadwick this week, and despite being on the short end of the results in both matches, the young team continued to show great poise and promise for the future. The Prep League golf teams are very competitive this year and the Cubs are showing their league foes that they will be a force for years to come.

As the weather begins to slowly turn to fall and the sun starts to set a little earlier, the games, matches, and meets become all that much more important for the Cubs. This next week will go a long way to seeing if the Cubs can capture league championships this fall. We hope to see you all out at a game, cheering the Cubs to victory. Have a great weekend and Go Cubs!
