Head of School's Message — Easter 2021

Dear Mayfield Community,

It seems amazing that just over a year ago we said goodbye to our students thinking that we would be apart for only a few weeks. Little did we know how much our lives would be changed over the following months. We have all been touched in different ways by the pandemic. We have endured loneliness, anxiety and loss. We have missed holidays with loved ones, postponed celebrations, and cancelled vacations. Graduations, proms, birthday parties and baby showers all went remote. Most tragically so many lost loved ones, often forced to mourn alone.
With the blossoming of springtime and our preparations for Easter comes joyful anticipation and hope. As the virus case numbers continue to decline and the vaccination rate continues to rise in L.A. County, Mayfield Senior School is poised to reopen the doors of our beautiful Strub Hall, welcoming students back to campus on April 8! Utilizing a hybrid model which incorporates careful safety protocols and procedures, we can’t wait to feel that amazing Cub energy in person again.

As we put the finishing touches on our return to 500 Bellefontaine, we had the great blessing to host our junior and senior retreats on campus during March. I was so incredibly touched and inspired by what I heard and experienced with our students. Their messages centered on the transformational power of this last year. Through hardship, uncertainty and sadness, they have found ways to grow in creativity, resilience and confidence as their relationship with God became more profound.

Our faculty and staff have also risen to new heights, finding the determination and resourcefulness to keep our students engaged and moving forward while strengthening their connections of love through community and faith. More than ever, our Holy Child mission provided our foundation, as Cornelia Connelly showed us the way. For this I will be eternally grateful.

So, as I complete my Lenten journey and prepare my heart for Easter joy, I am filled with gratitude. Thankful for the scientists, health professionals and essential workers who made such sacrifices for the good of others. Thankful for our Mayfield community—our students, parents, faculty, and staff—who continue to inspire and amaze me. Thankful for my family as we celebrated the birth of our new baby grandson, Heath. But, most of all, thankful for my Catholic faith as, with Pope Francis, we ask for the “grace to be amazed...Let us be amazed by Jesus so that we can start living again, for the grandeur of life lies not in possessions and promotions, but in realizing that we are loved.”

I pray that you have a joyful Easter filled with hope and that amazing grace!

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
