Head's Weekly Message — Feb. 19, 2021

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

I have to say that this has been one of the best weeks for me in a long time. Celebrating our amazing seniors on Tuesday at our long-awaited Ring Ceremony filled my heart with joy. It was a beautiful evening (albeit a little windy), and as dusk descended, brightened by the colors of the sunset, I think everyone could feel the love and optimism that the Class of 2021 has modeled for us during this very difficult year. I want to thank our beloved seniors for the light they shine every day keeping us all moving forward with hope.

The next morning it was such a blessing to begin my Lenten journey with both the sophomores and juniors on campus for our Ash Wednesday prayer service. The theme of healing and reconciliation was so meaningful as we were asked to examine how we can bring more empathy, forgiveness, and compassion into our relationships. Cornelia Connelly’s advice—“It is always best to err on the side of charity, and safest to take the best view we can of everyone”—served as an inspiration for our Student Campus Ministry Council, and I have been meditating on this wisdom all week. I was also so moved by the poem that served as the focus of our worship sharing:
The Fast Life

Fast from judging others; Feast on Christ dwelling in them.
Fast from fear of illness; Feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from words that pollute; Feast on speech that purifies.
Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; Feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism; Feast on hope.
Fast from negatives; Feast on encouragement.
Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion.
Fast from suspicion; Feast on truth.
Fast from gossip; Feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm; Feast on prayer that sustains.
Fast from anxiety; Feast on faith.

I plan to include this poem as part of my daily Lenten reflection.

I also plan to focus on all the things that we have to look forward to during these next few weeks. As we continue our athletic conditioning program on campus, we are excited for our upcoming “Mayfield Mornings,” giving our students the opportunity to come back to campus for worship and other activities on Wednesdays. The seniors will be scheduling their graduation dress fitting appointments on Wednesday, too. In addition—senior moms, please make sure you have RSVPd for our March 10th luncheon. Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing our ninth-grade parents on Zoom next Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. for the Class of 2024 curriculum presentation.

Most of all, I am looking forward to the prospect of resuming in-person instruction on our beautiful campus. As many of you know, the virus case numbers in L.A. County have declined to the point where schools can resume in-person instruction for students up to grade 6. At this point the state is requiring that case numbers must decline even further for high schools to be allowed to reopen their campuses as outlined in the “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” plan. In the meantime, we are doing everything in our power to prepare for a safe reopening.  Thanks as always for your support and prayers.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
