Head's Weekly Message — Jan. 29, 2021

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

I am extremely grateful that the regional stay at home order was lifted last Friday, which means we can resume some much needed activities on campus. As you know, athletic conditioning will resume on Monday (weather permitting), and we are in the midst of planning other activities including—at long last—our Ring Ceremony for the Class of 2021! I am so excited to share more plans as they are finalized!

I am also excited to announce that, after almost five years of planning, the Mayfield Senior School Board of Trustees has voted to begin a major renovation of our beautiful home to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Strub Hall.

In partnership with KFA Architecture and Illig Construction, the renovation project will focus on replacing and upgrading Strub Hall’s aging infrastructure (plumbing, electric, heating and cooling), retrofitting the building for seismic strength, improving accessibility and energy efficiency, as well as reconfiguring spaces to enhance academic and student life programming.

The first, and most ambitious, phase will be completed this summer. Students will return to campus in the fall to find a beautiful new senior lounge with direct access to the outside, improved visual arts spaces, including upgrades to the darkroom and digital film and media lab, and two new classrooms. We will all also be able to enjoy a number of upgraded spaces including a renovated health office and a new student support and leadership center.

Further renovations will take place during the 2021-22 school year and have been designed very carefully to minimize inconvenience to our school community. All the work behind the walls will make our home safer, greener, more comfortable and more accessible while preserving the historic nature and beauty of our treasured home.

We invite you to attend a Virtual Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to learn more about this exciting news—we will record the meeting for those unable to attend. Please also see this list of frequently asked questions for more background information and details, and feel free to submit your own questions before the meeting via this form.

I know you join me in thanking the Mayfield Senior School Board of Trustees for having the strategic vision and determination to support this important initiative moving our beloved school forward into the next 100 years.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
