Student faith leaders host an uplifting prayer service in Mayfield's "virtual chapel"

Every September, Mayfield's community comes together to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit. The tradition begins our school year, opening each of us up to grace, igniting the fire of creativity and of inspiration. Obviously this tradition needed to be adapted during remote learning, and adapt we did!
The Campus Ministry Council went above and beyond to create a truly meaningful student-led prayer service. They used a "virtual chapel" as a way to remain interactive, and the labor that went into creating such a seamless, prayerful experience was a marvel to faculty and students alike.

The theme was "Celebrating Differences," which was beautifully illustrated by the students' petitions in several languages—Tagalog (Sophia Labrador ’21), French (Ysabelle Magat ’21), Arabic (Mia Maalouf ’22) and Spanish (Citlali Ayala-Martinez ’23), with English translations as subtitles. An important part of the prayer service was the commissioning of all this year's Campus Ministry Council leaders. Our students and faculty were asked to bless them as they embarked on their faith-filled work of continuing to build our beloved community.

Ale Casillas ’21 offered a personal reflection, meditating on her own experience as a daughter of immigrants as she engaged in service at The Crittenton Center with women who had recently migrated to the United States. Ale set the tone for a year of compassion and growth: "Let us have an amazing year by embracing our courage, understanding, acceptance and love for one another... it will make a difference in the life of others, like those women made a difference in my life."

Our Campus Ministry team has orchestrated a new way of volunteering too, in the form of "Loaves and Fishes," a weekly sack lunch donation program for Union Station Homeless Services. For this week’s inaugural delivery, Mayfield families, faculty and staff contributed 207 homemade lunches!

In a year often characterized by crisis and challenge, Campus Ministry is nourishing the spiritual lives of each member of the Mayfield community, reimagining everything from our worship to our service.

Thank you to everyone involved in this beautiful launch to our 2020-21 school year, and bravo to our Campus Ministry Council!
