Welcome to our newest Cubs, who are already inspiring us with their positive spirit

Over the summer, each student recorded a short Flipgrid video to introduce herself to her fellow freshmen, and 70% of our incoming ninth-graders participated in Mayfield’s remote summer studies program to boost their skills in subjects like algebra and academic writing. And, last week, they Zoomed into their on-screen orientation activities with gusto—they met their Big Sisters, met their advisors, and bonded with their classmates, all online. 

As we all get to know our newest Cubs better, we’re grateful for the wide range of backgrounds and interests they bring to our Mayfield family. While it’s always fun to see what our freshman students have in common—there are four Maddies (two Madeleines, one Madilyn and one Madisyn!), three Ellas and two sets of twins—we also celebrate the differences that make our community strong. The Class of 2024 represents 33 different Catholic, public, charter and independent middle schools from across the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. Almost 30% of our ninth-graders arrived at Mayfield as the only students from their school, and 62% of the freshman class identify as students of color and indigenous heritage.

They are Honor Roll students, Girl Scouts, student leaders, debaters, reporters, yearbook editors, photographers, musicians, writers, actors and artists. And although volleyball was by far the most popular athletic pursuit for this group of girls, our Class of 2024 Cubs are also into basketball, swim, soccer and track—and horses! (Our 10 freshman equestriennes have a kindred spirit in Head of School Mrs. Morin, who’s an enthusiastic dressage rider.)

It’s hard to imagine your first week at high school without experiencing those freshman milestones—like donning your brown blazer for the first time, getting a warm back-to-school hug from Mrs. Morin, or joining in a Student Council singalong at your first assembly—but these students are building a special class bond through this challenging back-to-school kick-off. 

“We are so proud of the Class of 2024,” said Director of Admissions Merilisa Ramirez. “They really are forging new ground at Mayfield as the first freshman class to begin their high school journey remotely, and we’ve seen them approach this unique situation with amazing positivity.”

“We’re so grateful we got a chance to meet all these girls and their families earlier in the year,” added Jade Stewart ’09, Assistant Director of Admissions. “We know they bring an amazing spirit to our community, and we know they’re eager to explore all the new opportunities and experiences that Mayfield has to offer them.” 

Class of 2024 Cubs, we hope you feel the warm embrace of your Mayfield family—we’re here for you, and we can’t wait to welcome you to 500 Bellefontaine one day. We are all cheering for you!
