The Class of 2020 is going places! Here’s the list...
In a year when a global pandemic changed the landscape of the college admission process, senior students and their college counselors had to find new ways to navigate the next phase of their academic journey. Mayfield’s Class of 2020 certainly rose to the challenge!
Congratulations to our 77 graduating seniors, who will be attending 47 different colleges and universities in 19 states, plus Washington, D.C. Forty-five percent of our seniors will stay in California, with more than half of those students attending an in-state public university, and 18% of the class will attend a Catholic college.

Graduates will be attending a wide variety of schools, including Boston College, UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona, George Washington University, Howard University, Lewis & Clark, Loyola University Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Pitzer College, Pratt Institute, Santa Clara, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, Tulane University, and Wake Forest, among others. Acceptance rates inside the UCs and Cal States were especially strong this year—and five Mayfield students will be attending UC Berkeley together!
The College Counseling Office found new ways to help girls envision college life while they were still on campus this fall, introducing an alumnae fair with recent graduates, who shared their first-hand experiences with our students. But when remote learning and travel restrictions went into place, Co-Directors of College Counseling Samantha Pieper and Lynn Maloney had to find more creative approaches. Ms. Pieper explains, “Seniors used virtual tours, conversations with alumnae, and meetings with us to make an informed decision.”
After much introspection and guidance from the college counseling office—several students made a leap of faith—deciding on their university without ever stepping foot on their future college campus.
“The Class of 2020 demonstrated resilience and considerably reflected on where they wanted to be for four years, not just fall semester freshman year,” said Ms. Pieper, who added that she was particularly heartened that“most of the students are pursuing similar college paths to what they would in a year without COVID-19.”
Our senior class completed 837 applications to 206 different four-year colleges and universities, and the average number of applications per student was 11. Sixty-eight seniors reported receiving at least one scholarship offer, and 30 reported accepting an offer for their first year.
During a time of uncertainty, this group of girls was quick to adapt to a significant shift in the college decision-making process, and we celebrate the many ways they brought both grit and joy to that challenge. Bravo, Class of 2020!

Established in 1931, Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena, CA is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for young women grades 9-12.
