Head's Weekly Message — May 22, 2020

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

Congratulations to our amazing Mayfield Senior School community! Today marks the last day of classes for the 2019-20 school year—and what a year it has been. Of course, it will go down in history as the year of COVID-19, but I will remember this school year for much more than that. I will remember the extraordinary leadership of our Seniors who showed us all what compassionate servant leadership looks like. I will remember observing classes in which I saw students working through complicated challenges and grappling with complex issues with grit, determination, and grace. I will remember the courageous athletes and the generous artist who shared their skills and talents with us. And I will remember all the times we came together in retreats, prayer and worship led by our students with faith and love.

We have accomplished so much this year. We looked backward into our history to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our beloved Strub Hall and we looked forward into the future to ensure that our amazing community will continue to thrive. Most of all, we supported each other with creativity, gentleness, and compassion as we navigated the unprecedented challenges imposed by the global pandemic. I truly believe that our community has not only survived, it has grown stronger thanks to everyone—parents, students, faculty, staff, trustees, alumnae and friends—all pulling in the same direction supporting our mission with dedication and love. I thank God every day for making Mayfield my community—a blessing beyond measure.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your help, especially as we work to navigate these challenging times. The outpouring of support for our “Be Our Heroes” campaign was overwhelming, way surpassing our goal. Our community really stepped up with their generous commitment to support our Holy Child scholarship program—truly an amazing tribute to Cornelia Connelly and her vision.

This week we also continued to celebrate the wonderful Class of 2020. It was so much fun to help prepare and deliver their individual mother-daughter tea parties. We have some additional surprises in store for our seniors—so stay tuned. And today we launched a virtual gift to our Senior Class—a page of tributes to each student from a teacher or staff member, in addition to a “shout-out” from their Little Sisters too. This was a labor of love, to let our Seniors know the indelible mark they made inside our community. Feel free to read these notes yourself!

As we look past the next few weeks and prepare for our summer programs, it has become clear that we will have to begin our summer classes remotely. Our teachers are excited to continue to work with our students through technology. If further restrictions are lifted and it becomes possible for us to come together on campus, we will make plans to do so in compliance with the directives from the Health Department and government. In the meantime—we recognize that some students who have registered for a summer class might want to take a break from remote learning. If that is the case, please contact us for a full refund. Space may be created in some classes that are now full, so please be in touch if that is of interest.

Finally—as we continue to make plans for fall, we will be sending you updates over the summer to keep you informed. Please let me know if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions. I continue to pray for each of you and our beloved community. Together we will get through this with faith, hope, and lots of love. GO CUBS!

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
