Spring season cut short after winter sports rollercoaster
It has certainly been a strange time for Cubs Athletics—reflecting a concern echoed across the world. Last Friday, the CIF Section Commissioners voted to cancel the spring State and Regional Championships—a real disappointment for our 24 seniors who’ve had their final season cut short. These wonderful student-athletes have represented Mayfield with grace for the past four years and, when the situation allows, we will take the time to honor them.
Our winter season ended in February with some terrific moments. The highlight of the season came from the Varsity soccer team, who finished second in the Prep League—their best showing in over 20 years—behind perennial power Flintridge Prep. The Cubs fell in the first round of the playoffs to the eventual CIF runner-up. For the second year in a row the turnout was so large that we fielded two JV teams. Both JV Red and JV White showed huge improvement and, with only a handful of seniors graduating this year, the future for the soccer program looks very bright.
Water polo battled all season in a tough Prep League that had the Cubs pitted against the #3-ranked team in D4, as well as the #1 and #3 teams in D6, and the eventual D7 champion, La Salle. The Cubs battled for a D6 playoff spot until the final week before falling in a playoff play-in game to the Lancers in 2019, who they beat under the same circumstances last year. With first-year coach Ellie Karl '15 at the helm, water polo is another team that is looking forward to next season with great anticipation.
Perhaps no Cubs team had more obstacles this season than the basketball team. All but two girls on the team missed significant time because of injuries, including team MVP and last year's three-sport Athlete of the Year, Sarah Tupy '21, who missed the entire season. With a depleted lineup, the Cubs lost tight game after tight game, but battled to the end and won three of their last four games, including wins over rival FSHA and #4-ranked Rio Hondo Prep on senior night. With Tupy's return next season, as well as the growth in some other key positions, the Cubs will be a major contender in the Prep League next year.
For the first time, Mayfield won the Rivalry Series with FSHA. During the 2019-20 school year the Cubs defeated the Tologs in five of the eight Varsity sports, picking up wins in basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, and water polo. Despite an abrupt ending to our spring sports season, we will return with a number of stellar athletes and we can't wait to get back to preparing for next season with our summer workouts.
