Cubs lead early Prep League play with big wins on the track and in the pool

The Spring season kicked off in earnest this week, with all four teams in action for the first time. The Cubs track & field team came away with a resounding victory over the other five Prep League schools in the first cluster meet of the year—their 151-point score was well ahead of runner up Chadwick's 44-point total. The Cubs won 10 of the 15 events and had individual victories by eight different members of the team!
Jolie Beegle '21 was the lone multi-event winner (long jump and triple jump), and our other winners were Audrey Suarez '21 (800), Cameron Gomez '22 (1600), Emma Cadena '20 (3200), Sarah Tupy '21 (100 hurdles), Arianne Rising '23 (300 hurdles), Sophia Barriga '23 (shot put), and Natalie Miera '23 (discus). Tupy, Gomez, and Suarez combined with Cecilia Kvochak ’23 to win the 1600 relay by over 30 seconds! It was a dominant performance by a team looking well-primed for their sixth consecutive league title.

Swim & dive kicked off their season with two big wins at Marymount yesterday—102-59 (Varsity) and 103-31 (JV). The Cubs were led by Sami Pratt '21’s wins in the 200 IM and the 100 fly, both in CIF consideration times. Pratt's IM time was the eighth-fastest in Mayfield history. Marcela Laguna '23 (100 breaststroke) and Alex Garcia '23 (100 backstroke) won their first races for the Cubs, both in CIF consideration times. Holly Gmelich '23’s runner-up finishes in the 500 free and 50 free also moved her into the top 10 all-time in both events in her first meet ever as a Cub! Kate Grinnell '23 and Margaux Berger '23, with three victories each, helped lead the JV team to their lopsided victory.

Badminton had an exciting first week of competition. The Cubs placed fourth in the inaugural San Marino Tournament last weekend, but fell in a hotly contested match with Gahr on Tuesday. The Cubs saw great early season results from Amanda Rojo '23 and her teammates from Loyola, Gabe Huiskel '20 and Fred Riedel '20.

Softball continued their early season growth. The Cubs are replacing a talented graduating class from 2019 and have struggled early on. However, the team showed some fight in their loss to Sacred Heart of L.A. The Cubs open Prep League play today with a game against Rio Hondo Prep at the Glendale Sports Complex at 3:30 p.m.

The Cubs look to continue their early season success with many games over the coming weeks before Spring Break. Make sure to follow us @msscubs for updates and head over to the website to get a schedule and make it out to a game. Go Cubs!
