This is only the second time in the past 20 years that the Cubs have finished this high in league, and now the team awaits tomorrow morning’s CIF playoff pairings announcement. The Cubs hope to send Seniors Sofia Avila, Hayley Eaves, Elena Jardino, Nadia O'Reilly, and Ashley Pinon off with a deep run in the playoffs. Classmate Paloma Torres also led the JV Red team all season.
Beset by injuries all season long, the basketball team has struggled in league, but they finished their season on a high note. After ending a long losing streak two weeks ago to FSHA, the Cubs won their final two games of the season. The team picked up its first league win of the season over rival Westridge last Friday and, on Tuesday night, the Cubs hosted the #4 team in our division, Rio Hondo Prep, on Senior Night. In a raucous gymnasium, Seniors Lauren Clawson, Amanda Mar, Lauren Robles, Anastasia Vu, and Jessie Zovak triumphed with a thrilling 46-43 win over the Kares. The JV team, coached by alum Malissa Balderama '09, also ended their season with wins over Westridge and Rio Hondo Prep, capping a stellar 2019-20 campaign that saw them place third in league with a 14-7 record.
With a strong sense of deja vu, the Cubs water polo team tied for the final playoff spot once again this year, forcing them into another "mini-playoff" match-up with La Salle. Unfortunately the Cubs could not overcome the Lancers this year and fell 14-11 in an extremely well-played game. The team showed a fighting spirit and a ton of growth during the season led by Seniors Daniela Bachman, Audrey Bland, Abby Gagnier, Lucy Howell, Marina Rodriguez-Garcia, and Steffi Zavaleta
The Varsity soccer team is the only winter sport going into postseason play, but Monday marks the official kick-off of our four spring sports—badminton, softball, swim & dive, and track & field. Many of the sports have already been training for weeks and as the weather warms up, it promises to be a very exciting season.
Keep an eye out for the Cubs playoff soccer schedule tomorrow on
