Soccer and water polo teams vie for CIF playoff berths

With one week to go in the regular season for our winter sports, it's officially nail-biting time on campus. With just a few games remaining, the Cubs soccer and water polo teams are looking to secure playoff berths, and the basketball team looks to finish strong and set the tone for next season. Water polo picked up two pivotal wins in Prep League play this week. On Tuesday the Cubs handled Brentwood, 12-5, and then dismantled league rival Westridge the next day, 11-4.
The two wins even the Cubs’ overall record to 10-10 but, most importantly, the Cubs improved to 5-6 in the ultra-competitive Prep League. With just one game to play, the Cubs are one game ahead of 4-7 La Salle for the fourth spot in the CIF Southern Section playoffs. If the teams end up in a tie, the Lancers and the Cubs face a playoff play-in game for the second year in a row! Here's hoping the Cubs win their last regular season game next week and clinch the berth outright!

Soccer also has a very exciting week ahead. After tying Poly 1-1 this past Tuesday, the Cubs, Chadwick, Poly, and Westridge are battling to secure the league's two final playoff spots. Two teams will make it, two will not. The Cubs have games remaining vs. Providence (today), Chadwick (on Tuesday), and then the season finale on Thursday vs. Westridge. Two wins will likely clinch a second-place league finish and a CIF playoff berth, and it all starts this afternoon against Providence at Occidental.

Basketball hosted Flintridge Prep last night in the Cubs Cave. The Rebels have not lost a Prep League game since Jan. 6, 2016—a streak of over 50 games. The Cubs gave the Rebels all they could handle in the first half before Prep pulled away in the second half. This evening Mayfield will host Westridge, looking to get a nice win before the final week of the season.

As the season winds down, we’re hosting three really important Senior Night games next week. We’ll honor the members of the Class of 2020 at each game and then hopefully cheer the Cubs on to victory—please come and be loud and send off our Seniors with a win! Here is the schedule:

Tuesday, Feb. 4 — Basketball (Home) vs. Rio Hondo Prep @ 5:00 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 5 — Water Polo @ Flintridge Prep @ 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 6 — Soccer vs. Westridge @ Occidental @ 3:30 p.m.

See you at a game and Go Cubs!
