The new year heralds a surge for Prep League honors and playoff berths

Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy some time away with family and renew for the new year! Our student-athletes were busy with their workouts over the break and our basketball and soccer teams welcomed back dozens of former Cubs for our annual Alumnae Games on Dec. 28. As we move into 2020, our winter sports teams enter a key stage of their schedules against highly ranked opponents. Our soccer and water polo teams took on the #1-ranked teams in CIF this week, and last night our basketballers traveled to play the #3-ranked team.
In the best game of the week so far, water polo took to the road yesterday and won a big league match against Brentwood. The Cubs dominated from the outset and ran away from the Eagles with a 21-11 victory. The win thrusts the Cubs right back into the playoff race in the tightly contested Prep League. Just two days earlier the Cubs were down 7-4 at half time to the #1-ranked Flintridge Prep before eventually falling to the Rebels. But with many big matches in the coming weeks, the team looks poised to make another run at the playoffs.

This afternoon the soccer teams will take on league rival Pasadena Poly. Varsity travels to Poly for a 3:15 p.m. start and JV Red hosts Poly at Occidental at 3:30 p.m. The JV teams have been sporting their brand new jerseys this week, just in time for team pictures! The Cubs and Panther Varsity teams are tied as the Prep League schedule heats up, so today's match with go a long way towards playoff seeding. At 9-2-4, the Varsity team should be playing deep into February!

Basketball continues to work hard and improve. The Cubs have been battling numerous injuries to over half of the Varsity squad, but show huge progress with each game. Varsity dropped a 30-29 game to Poly and will step out of league to play at Pilibos tomorrow afternoon.

I am sure you are still working on those new year's resolutions, but we hope you add making it out to a Cubs game to your list of things to do! You won't be disappointed. The Cubs are competing wonderfully against some of the best talent in the CIF Southern Section and it always helps them to have our spirited fans cheering them on.

Once again, Happy New Year and Go Cubs!
