Soccer kicks off winter sports season with two big wins

The winter sports season officially kicked off this week with all of our teams playing non-league games. Varsity soccer had perhaps the most successful season debut—the Cubs outscored their two opponents (Glendale and La Cañada) by a combined score of 13-1.
The team is led by a stellar group of sophomores and freshmen, with just the right amount of senior leadership. The Cubs host Temple City today before taking time off until after Thanksgiving. For the second year in a row we had so many students try out for soccer that we are fielding two JV teams (Red and White). Both JV teams are off to solid starts as well, getting great experience—the Red team defeated Glendale, 3-0 on Tuesday.

Our water polo team has also been busy this week. Under the leadership of first-year head coach and Mayfield alum Ellie Karl '15, the Cubs have won two of their first three matches. The Cubs defeated Webb (14-6) and San Marino (19-14). Play continues in the Burbank High tournament tomorrow morning at Burbank.

The Cubs basketball teams are also off and running. Varsity has split its first two games, defeating Mountain View last night (39-34) to even their record at 1-1. The JV team is 2-0 with wins over Blair and Mountain View. Mayfield makes the short trip over to Marshall tomorrow night, looking to continue their solid early season play.

The biggest event of the week by far, however, is the CIF Cross Country Finals tomorrow morning at 9:05 a.m. The Varsity team won their heat at last week's CIF Prelims and are considered to be one of the teams to beat in tomorrow's race. The Cubs (ranked #10 in the State) have a good chance to win a CIF Championship and advance to next week's California State Championships.

It is a busy and exciting time for the Cubs. We love when you come support our girls to cheer them on. Schedules and results are posted on the website and you can also follow along in real time on Twitter at @msscubs. Also, please consider joining our Booster Club. The Boosters are doing so much to support our student-athletes and your support of them is invaluable.

See you at a game! Go Cubs!
