The “rowdiest” game in Valley volleyball raises over $3,000 as the Cubs push for playoff berths

What a week it's been! It started with the biggest event on our annual athletic calendar—the Dig Pink volleyball game and Booster Club BBQ on Monday night. It was a truly special night in the Cubs Cave.
More than 600 Mayfield and FSHA fans packed the Sr. Mary Wilfrid Gymnasium in the largest crowd anyone could remember. The Booster Club fed over 400 people and the two schools battled for nearly four hours in a match-up of two of the best volleyball teams in the Valley. The Cubs Frosh/Soph team began things on a high note with a two-set sweep of the Tologs. The JV team followed suit with a two-set sweep of their own.

With our new Pep Band and the Athletic Leadership Council leading the cheers, and the stands full of Mayfield students wearing their pink tie-dyed shirts, the Varsity match began in front of a packed house. The Cubs and Tologs battled in three razor-thin sets, but ultimately the Cubs fell to a talented and deep FSHA team. But the Mayfield spirit was evident until the last point. One referee even remarked that it was the rowdiest girls volleyball game he had officiated in his 18-year career in the San Gabriel Valley! Most importantly, the two schools raised over $3,300 for the Cancer Support Community of Pasadena.

It was a difficult task for the volleyball teams to keep the same kind of intensity for their league matches later in the week. However, the Varsity squad was able to rebound and win a huge five-set thriller last night over Flintridge Prep that all but ensures a playoff berth for the Cubs. Mayfield's win avenged an earlier five-set loss to the Rebels back in September. The Cubs final regular season match will be a senior night clash with first place and undefeated Pasadena Poly on Thursday night.

The hottest team on campus just may be the Cubs golf team. Mayfield won its seventh consecutive match of the season by beating Buckley on the road on Tuesday. The Cubs were led by sophomore Amy Baum's career best 41 and our Athlete of the Week, Emily Wallace '20, who continues to impress during her senior campaign. The Cubs will also host their senior night this Tuesday as they play host to Chadwick at the Altadena Golf Course.

The Cubs tennis team saw its CIF ranking improve this week by three positions, with the Cubs now ranked #7 in the CIF Division 3 poll. The tennis team split their matches this week. On Tuesday, the Cubs defeated Providence 15-3 and yesterday they lost their first match in over three weeks, falling in a close fight to Westridge, 10-8.

The Cross Country team, also ranked #7 in CIF, ran with a shorthanded squad last weekend in Huntington Beach's Central Park Invitational. Even missing some of our top runners, the Cubs placed 8th in the meet. Today the teams head north to Fresno to run in tomorrow's Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park. The meet serves as valuable experience for the Varsity team, as this is the same course that the California State Championships are held each Thanksgiving weekend. The Cubs return as the defending small schools champion from the 2018 meet and look to have another strong performance.

The fall sports teams would like to thank all of you for your wonderful support this season. Monday's Dig Pink match was a highlight, but our fans have been incredible since the games began back in mid-August. As the season winds down and our team make a push for league titles and CIF playoff berths, we hope you will continue to come to games and show your crazed Cubs fandom! It is the best way to show your support and it always gives our student-athletes extra motivation. The next few weeks look to be very exciting...come cheer us on!

Go Cubs!
